    Right??

I make my dogs work for a tiny piece of bait in the show ring, I like them well trained before we hit the shows. Some breed judges don't like bait in their ring either.

That sounds like a very good first effort. LOL, we were excused for our first two, and only two, correction matches.

I'd say that was a success, not a moderate success! wow, 9 months! *sigh* setting the bar so high for the rest of us with new pups!

Question about the "stand" training - i get the feeding etc (and that's how i was taught to teach it to Scout- he kind of taught himself "wait" though when we would be walking out in the bush, so i just transitioned that to stay), but how do you transition that to being at the 6ft distance in front of the dog while they are examined? just don't move out so far in front until they "get" the stand with treats? then slowly move out?

Yes, exactly. Wait until they can do it reliably with you right in front of them, and then gradually move farther away. Adding the 6 foot distance is relatively easy, so there’s no rush to do that. I’ve just recently started doing the stand for exam off lead and 6 feet away from my youngsters. They had zero trouble with taking off the leash and my moving away. Getting the concept of not moving in the first place was the harder part! If you try it and find they have trouble when you are 6 feet away, go back to doing it closer for a while until they are more confident.

Thanks Annette. I have forgotten all that I have forgotten teaching things to a puppy for the 1st time! I just seemed a bit easier to "communicate" with Scout as a young adult, than it is with a baby puppy. That said, he is fantastic, loves to listen and figure out what I'm asking....
We're working on the "stay" concept in level one. from sits, to stands, to downs. I am trying to teach that even if i haven't said "stay", if i've said "sit" or "down" or "stand" that means stay put in that position until given the ok to leave it...
and heel position is hard but will get easier...he's such a little squirt that the natural tendency is to swing out 90 degrees so its easier to look up and see my face. and from my part, its hard to remember that he's little and that certain signals need to be at nose height which is waaaayyyyy down low with him right now!
