We did Novice Obedience, two runs, and it went pretty well. There was a lot of dogs and people, so very high on the distraction index. His healing was ok the first run through. On the second, his attention was much better and he did very well on the about turns. Same with the Figure 8, second time through was much better. He's not ready for stand for exam, so we did sit. As he's a typical Lab puppy, he goes into full body wiggle when someone approaches, so we need a LOT of work on this. He does do a very good stand stay though, so at least that part is good!
Since he is not ready for off leash healing, we did the 2nd healing pattern on leash, and it was good both times.
Recall had me a bit worried with all that was going on. He did a great job on the first run, just very slightly crooked on the front, finish was excellent. Got a very good comment on this from the "judge" who was amazing that Brooks is only 9 months old. ON the second run, a dog in the ring next to us let out a very loud bark just as Brooks was almost to me, he immediately froze and turned to see what was going on. I gave him a quick "here" and he came, but sat very crooked trying to see what the barking was all about. The "judge" had us do the exercise again, and he did well with it.
Overall I'd call today a moderate success. It was a location that he had never been to, and many, many distractions he had never encountered. We had a few good compliments from others who were working and watching around the rings.
I did enter him at a show in NJ at the end of April in Beginner Novice, my only real concern is the sit for exam, but we'll work on that between now and then!

What show did you enter him in?
Sounds like he did great for his first match!

How do you teach the stand-for-exam? The way we’ve done it with my young dogs has worked very well, although I don’t know if it’s because of them or the method, LOL, but they don’t budge an inch. The way we start is in a sit, and as soon as the judge moves near them, we feed them like a pez dispenser. Gradually they get less food and the judge gets closer even touching them in the exam. At first just as the judge reaches towards them to touch them we feed lots of treats, then gradually not until after the exam is over. Then we try (going back a few steps if needed) in a stand. What this does is make them find the handler (with food) MUCH more interesting than the random judge who doesn’t even give them the time of day.

Brooks is a superstar! ⭐️
Annette that is a great technique, I do pretty much the same thing to teach stand for conformation. A well known breeder feeds his dogs like a Pez Dispenser in the show ring. LOL
