Two out of the top 3 Obedience dogs in the country (as measured by the National Obedience Championship tournament this weekend) are Labs. First and 3rd places were both Labs; 2nd was a Golden.
When I first started out in Obedience, Labs were not thought of as particularly great Obedience dogs, but that has really been changing the last 10 years or so. Got to love it!
Field folks might be interested to know that the National Champion, Cedar is a Lean Mac grandson.

Yay for the Labs!
So strange to me, the regional differences. Not many Labs in the obedience ring here. Janice Gunn often comes down to the bigger trials, but other than that there are just a few of us. Border Collies, Aussies and Goldens rule around here. The three top local trainers have these breeds, which I suspect has something to do with it.
Can a lab do IPO obedience stuff. I think so but when am at the dog park i see across the road a working dog club work. Never seen a lab. i am only talking about the obedience stuff not the bite work etc. Just curious.
gigi flipped a training switch around 10 months till then she was very happy go lucky . Now when we train she is getting more and more intense . Her drive goes on for over an hour of intense training and still she wants to keep going.

As far as I know there is no breed requirement for IPO, but I’m not that familiar with it. Can’t see why a Lab couldn’t do the Obedience portion, but most would not be temperamentally suited for bite work. Most people with Labs who are interested in Obedience go with AKC, not IPO.

When I lived in New England in the late 90s/early 2000s, there were lots of Labs in competition. Goldens were a close second at the time. Don't remember many herding breeds other than the Shelties. We have an exceptional Aussie breeder locally. Really nice dogs -- beautiful, too -- that excel at conformation, agility, obedience and herding. And, they are not typically very snarky. When Aussie Nationals was around here last summer about a dozen people locally won versatility awards (similar to Lab nationals in that they have to Q in so many different events and I think they have to pass a conformation exam to qualify for the award -- but I could be a little off on that) and the classes were huge; 85 Aussies in Novice B!
Long ago, one of the first labs I had was a big, muscular, intact male. He actually got a Hunting Retriever (UKC) title. (It was when the sport had just begun.) But a friend of ours was employed at a kennel that trained and supplied protection dogs... many German imports. So just for kicks and giggles, our friend wanted to know if Buck could do the work. He loved it... even the sleeve work (but he always looked goofy doing it, like he knew it was a game.) There was one deal where the bad guy goes out and hides, the dog finds him and barks to hold the suspect there.
We had to stop all that nonsense when Buck ran out on a mark at a HT and started growling and barking at the gunners. Heck, the guy even had a gun!
Anyhow, Buck was excellent with the courage and hardness tests. He loved it. In pursuit of the bad guy, Buck would take him out at the knees, basically tackle him.
Anyhow, we dropped the whole thing when he got confused about who was a bird thrower and who was a "bad guy".
Annette... that is awesome that the top-dog was a Lean Mac grandson. Definitely a hard working line.

The parent club posted a congratulatory note to the 1st place team on their page, I believe. I feel like I saw it come through my feed. Labs are definitely a versatile breed, which is nice in a lot of ways. The parent club has been championing that aspect of the breed with their versatile producer award.
In my area, there are still a number of Goldens, Border Collies competing at a high level. I personally enjoy seeing the non-traditional obedience breeds work. In my area there's a Bullmastiff team that is adorable. I also like seeing tiny toys doing obedience and agility. The jumps for Chihuahuas crack me up -- but hey, I'm ALL for people getting a handle on training their toy breeds. The dogs with the worst manners are always toys.
