    Well, that worked out unexpectedly

I was supposed to show Chloe this weekend for the last time until fall, but I’d been waffling about whether to go due to the canine flu outbreak that has been making it’s way up the East coast. I think the odds of her catching it would be really small, but since dogs can contract it and be contagious yet asymptomatic, our training center isn’t allowing anyone in who has been at a show where there have been confirmed cases, and I think the risk of being shut out of class for 3 weeks is greater than the benefit of showing when the entry is pretty small so there wouldn’t be many OTCH points available.

So anyway, I was kind of on the fence but leaning towards no when I got a message from a friend of mine that she was no longer going to be able to go to the seminar our training center is hosting this weekend and did I want her spot? The only reason I didn’t sign up for it in the first place was I thought my daughter was going to have a gymnastics meet, and by the time we found out that wasn’t happening all the spots were taken.

So instead of showing and potentially risking Chloe contracting the flu, I’ll be taking the puppies to a problem-solving seminar hosted by Bridget Carlson. VERY excited about it as out trainer has been following (and introducing techniques to us from) Bridget for a couple years now, and I’ve been very happy with many of the things she suggests (and can ignore the things I don’t like). They’ve had her here before for seminars but I’ve always had some conflict or another and I’ve been feeling left out as most of the people in class have worked with her at some point and have all sorts of “you had to be there” moments, LOL, and I’ll finally be part of the “inner circle”.

So, if you had been able to schedule this from the start, maybe you'd have done so? Nice when a plan unexpectedly comes together!

Yes, exactly! The shows were a consolation prize for not being able to go to the seminar, LOL.

You'll have to let me know how you like the seminar. She came out here a couple years ago and, well, lets just say there was a very negative situation and people walked out. I was really disappointed because I liked some of her ideas and methods.

I heard nothing but positives from a friend of mine who attended one of her workshops. Sounds like a great weekend!

From someone who is in an area that had many outbreaks of the flu, and lots of dog events being cancelled because of it, think it is a very good idea that you are not going. You're right, a dog can have it and be asymptomatic, passing it along. Quite a few dogs have died around here. Rescue events have been cancelled. A Petsmart boarding facility and a rescue had to quarantine themselves for weeks, disinfecting and nursing dogs. Indiana had a case of a cat coming down with it. Waiting to hear what this year brings as it's been around for 2 years now.

Our vet told us that there is some hybrid strain hat they've been seeing that is a mixture of canine influenza and kennel cough. Bear had it when he was 3-4 months old. Scary stuff!

There’s two main strains active right now - the one that was in Fran’s area, and the one that started in Florida. Merck makes a vaccine that will cover both, but many vaccines only cover the one that’s been around longer. This new one from what I’ve been hearing has been making dogs sicker, faster. My trainer knows someone in FL whose dogs are sick and her young dog had to spend a week in ICU with pneumonia.

Definitely scary stuff, especially if you have a young puppy, elderly or otherwise immunocompromised dog. Since it’s been spreading at shows, the best thing to stop the outbreak would be if everyone stayed home, but I doubt that will happen.

Hybrid strain, that's it alright.... This new canine flu (cats can get it too apparently) came from Asia with a group of sick "Retail Rescue" dogs that were imported for adoption.

    This makes me so mad.

Anyways, I though you may be interested in this link, true/false, myths etc...

I also chatted w/ our show vet (one of my vets in real life too) on this topic. He has not had any cases yet, nor have any been recently verified in the state from the sounds of it. Said it is going to end up being renamed "kennel cough complex" as it is basically just that, and tmts wouldn't change regardless of whether they culture it or not so most aren't going that route. Said dogs current on the Nobivac bordetella were doing the best -- thankfully that's what I use here and mine are all current as of about 6 wks ago. He is not even ordering the H2N3 etc vaccine as he said he'd probably end up tossing half a tray at this time (and it is very expensive). One of his bigger show dog clients did order it for her dogs, though.

I think one of my pups got it at their training center over in W. WA a couple mos ago after the 2 big shows. The doggy day care group was shut down locally last fall/ early winter as I recall here too. Mine were probably ~7 mos out on their Nobivac IntraTrac 3 at the time and were fine. It's our local dog shows this weekend, so fingers crossed our luck/ health continues since my 2 youngest (4mos and 2 yo) are both entered.
