    Sometimes you win.....

    Sometimes you lose.....

NQ'd today. Brooks layed down on the stay so he could eat the painters tape on the floor that was marking the spot. He had eye balled it when we approached the spot, and I thought "oh crap". I sat him with his butt on the tape, but the little stinker just let his butt slide back to get to the tape.

Other than that he did everything else better than yesterday. Lost 1/2 point on heeling for forging, lost 1/2 point on the figure 8 for a slightly crooked sit, and 1/2 point on the recall for another slightly crooked sit.

Overall I call this weekend a success, and I had a lot of nice compliments, including the judge today, about how well he did. Now we start working with painters tape all over the place!

As long as you're moving forward over time, that's what matters. It seems that things that are attached to the floor really fascinate Brooks.

Actually the judge and I were laughing, and quite a few spectators were giggling. I wasn't mad at all, I even told the judge that I still had a great day out with my dog. What's really funny is we still had the recall exercise, which started from that same spot, which now had no tape to mark it. When the trial was over one of the stewards came over to me and asked if he could have Brooks help him pull up the rest of the tape around the ring. We had a good laugh on that one!

It's like his kryptonite. At one of our obedience classes I've been putting a competitors number card next to him when we do stays. The first time I did, before I made it across the ring, Brooks was chomping away on it. I'm like "seriously"...... and of course everyone got a good laugh out of it.

I've been working on recalls and heeling with random items laying about, guess we'll be do it with stays now!

I can tell you this, I learned a lot training Bruce. I've applied much of what I learned to training Brooks. I'm keeping a notebook on all the mistakes I've made now with Brooks, along with all the good things, so if/when I ever get another puppy, it will be a whole different ball game.

I will say that Brooks being so high drive has really pushed me to up my training game. I can honestly say that there are times I'm amazed when something really clicks for him, and me. I've had a LOT of ah-ha moments training Brooks.

    Those get lots of dogs!

We put those garage sale circle stickers all over the floor in my home obedience building and both have tape all over the floor for pivot boxes, figure 8s, stuff like that so they get pretty acclimated over time.

Kryptonite was green too, wasn't it? In the Superman comics? Was it green painter's tape? LOL. Forging is an easier thing to work with than lagging, I think.

I wouldn't even say mistakes! each dog is different, so things one dog never needed training-wise another dog will we're always learning! but good to note it as something to test future dogs on

I admit obedience never really interested me. rally-o is the closest I got. but hearing everyone's stories makes me curious enough to try we'll see if my next dog is keen to try. I enjoy more active sports more but balancing those with something calmer is good (Penny and I had a hard time with Rally-O but I have a feeling it was exactly what we needed - VS always working on full throttle in sports, it taught us to work with more patience).

LOL ... now you know what you need to proof! Like Labradorks we frequently train with stickers, tape or chalk marks on the floor.

Does he have a strong “leave it”? If not, you should teach him one as it comes in very handy. Sass has thought about eating the armband numbers when we practice, but she knows “leave it” and will respect that if I tell her as I am setting her up. You can see from the look on her face that she really, really, wants to shred the paper but knows she’ll get in trouble if she does so she restrains herself! But if Brooks knows that, you can try to spot any potential “kryptonite” as you are setting up and specifically instruct him not to touch it. I used to have to use “leave it” with Chloe for the judges on the stand for exam so she would know she wasn’t supposed to wiggle over to greet them. Overall, probably one of the most useful things I ever taught them.

It was the blue painters tape, but I did pick up some green this morning just in case!

Brooks has a pretty solid "leave it" and I thought about telling him that but wasn't sure if I could. I guess it would have been better to take the hit for an extra command, vs an NQ.
