    Beginner Novice Trial Number 5

Brooks and I did our 5th BN trial at the Oriole Dog Training Club today. I'm happy to report he scored a 197 and took 1st place in a class of 9 dogs. We lost 2 points on healing, one for lagging the other for crowding. 1/2 point for lagging on the figure 8, which is really good as we've struggles a bit on this. He lost the final 1/2 point for licking the judge on the sit for exam. Damn friendly Labradors!!!

Very Good. I'm sorry to say, even if you lost points on it, the licking is my favourite part of your run.

I'd take a 1/2 point deduction for the licking!

    Congrats Barry and Brooks!

My Mia didn't pass her first CGC test for licking the judge, she actually licked the side of her face and her huge hoop earring came out. The judge freaked out, it was really strange, its not like Mia was aggressive, or pulled it out with her teeth or anything, she was just being sweet. I felt that the lady's face should probably not been so close to my, (or any dog's) face for the sit for exam portion of the test. Mia did pass the next time, with flying colors. :-)

I feel that friendliness and sweet demeanor is such a huge part of our breed's standard, that as long as they do the exercise they should not be marked off for it. I know when I show in conformation, that my dogs are so happy to see the judge that they will sometimes sneak in a kiss during the exam, it's a hard thing to break!

    Yes.

We did a second trial there today and scored 196, and I felt the judge was pretty generous. Brooks heeling was way off, he actually barged past me on the halt which almost never happens, and he sniffed the ground at that spot. I think there was something on the ground there, and on several other spots as many of the dogs were very distracted in the same spots. We did finish 1st again today in a class with 8 dogs. The judge commented on how unusual it was to have a BN "A" class that big.

Overall I'm very please with our progress. We are doing 2 more BN shows in September, and a Rally Trial at the end of Sept. I'm also planning to do a few more Rally trials in November, hopefully we can finish Rally Novice this year.

Instead of waiting until November: Please consider going to the LRC and MJLRC trials since the National is in the east this year! Lots of fun and chances to meet up the second week in October. There is also a WC.
