Aww shoot... I left Kanzi home last weekend since I was pretty sure she'd be wicketed out. That was why I asked Nina to wicket Pippin, because I had just measured her at 21 or a hair over. My measurements were correct so I made the right choice w/ Kanzi. Think she'd be 1/4" under the 21 unless I feed her a lot of extra apples.....

We measured the girls in class a couple weeks ago so I could be sure of their jump heights, and Sass was about 20.5, while Cookie was about 21.5. Chloe is 22 even so they are both shorter than their mom! Dad is about 23, I think. The funny thing is, people in other breeds all tell me how much they LOVE Sass’s size and are very disappointed when I tell them she is under standard.

Same here -- 90% of the people who are looking for hunting/ pet companions LOVE Kanzi and her size. And since her work ethic / trainability/ temperament/ structure/health testing etc are so good, I'm not going to let a number (height) stand in the way w/ her. I'll try to breed up in size instead for myself but really, small imo, is not a bad thing anymore. It used to be a bit of a hindrance at hunt tests but now w/ some of the smaller spaniel types and NSDT running tests, judges have become more aware of their set ups. I've had several obed judges tell me privately how much they love Kanzi and her size too, so I hope you are not discouraged so much about that that you've ditched the idea of breeding her if all else turns out. Remember the FCI standard has no DQs, so there are other games to play as far as conformation. Sonya and Mata's grandma (Swedish import who was an AmCH before the std DQ) was only 19.5" and clearly she produced some super nice dogs, so there is hope.

I'd much rather see them a bit small, than too big. The main thing for me in the overall outline. Does the dog actually look like a Labrador? Alas, nowadays, no one seems to really know what they are supposed to look like from the dogs I've seen.

Go back about 14 years when my friends we here in the US judging several shows in the northeast. They came to visit us once the shows were done. When they arrived they saw my girl Fannie, and they asked why isn't she being shown, going on to say she would have easily placed first amongst the dogs they had judged. I told them her former owners said she was too small. They both looked at me with pained expressions and said she would be a show winning bitch back in the UK. I never measured Fannie, but she was almost identical in size to Sophie, who is right at 21.5".

I thought Sophie was smaller than 21.5". That's not small imo.
