Today at the show and go......

Brooks and I went to an obedience show and go at Wilmington Kennel Club this morning. We did 3 novice runs, and Brooks did well. This was our first time doing off leash healing in a competition like environment and that also went well. Then we did group sits. I sat Brooks, told him stay and walked away. I turn around to see Brooks intently watching the woman who was next to us feeding treat after treat after treat to her standard poodle. Of course after about 10 seconds of watching this Brooks decided he wanted in on the treats. Thankfully nothing bad happened, I grabbed Brooks' leash and was going to re-sit him. While I'm doing this, poodle lady is still shoving treats into the dogs mouth. Knowing it's pointless to continue I take Brooks from the ring.

Now I know show and go's are for training. But for crying out loud, if your dog can't stay without having you stand in front of it shoving food in it's face, maybe you've got some gaps in your training program, and shouldn't be testing them at a show and go.

Full disclosure, this woman has trained at the same location as I have in the past. So I sort of know her. One of her poodles has been doing rally novice for close to 3 years, I have no idea how many legs she may have, but she's stated she will not move up until the dog scores a 100.

Sometimes I just gotta shake my head and wonder.

Good grief.... Maybe she needs to pick a different sport but that's just plain rude imo!!!

You know, I use tons of treats when training something. After they know it, I wean them off. If I was unsure if my dog could perform without treats I’d keep training instead of going to a show and go.

That woman certainly shouldn’t have been doing that at a show n’ go, but instead of leaving, I would have re-sat him and stood right near him enforcing the stay ... it’s a good opportunity for proofing!

I was too pi$$ed to think of that in the moment. We did do a second group sit/down which went much better. I made sure we were as far from poodle girl as we could get. He was still very distracted, and his tail was wagging the whole time on the sit. A lady came up to me as we were leaving the ring and told she's never seen a happier dog than Brooks.

    Barry,
You just need to learn to spit treats at BROOKS from a remote location. LMIAO 😂😁😂

Urgh. talk about a distraction I wouldn't think to proof for. that doesn't seem right at all, not to do this right among the other dogs. If she needed that level of proofing she should have at minimum have brought her dog far off (sounds like this was just training anyway right?) but even at that.

I would think her poodle would get bored out of it's skull doing the same thing all the time. We were always training one level up from where we were trialling. Is she doing that?

I’m wondering if the poodle won’t perform at all without the treats? She’s probably come to expect and demand it.

I have no idea what she's training for. She has several Standard Poodles, and I'm not sure which one was in the ring. I've seen her at several Rally Trials over the past two years, and she was in a Rally class I was doing with Bruce. She's also trained at a private location I've used. I haven't had any real conversations with her, but in listening her talk to the owner of the private training spot she's full of excuses of why her dogs can't do this or that or the other thing.

Tanya - There were 8 or 9 dogs in the ring, and she was smack in the middle of the line up.
