Or does this vary greatly from breeder to breeder so there is no real rule of thumb?

I was kicking around the idea of looking at breeders for dogs that are non puppy but not old (ballpark of 5 month to 3 years of age with preference for closer to 1 year of age) but when I asked in an online lab agility group I am getting ballpark figures of well of 3000+ (well above puppy price) as these are considered "started dogs" or "trained dogs". So I may as well reconsider the puppy plus daily dog walker as it will cost the same if not even less! And I can train them the way I want and ensure proper socialization. Or may just go back to a rescue dog...

I get paying puppy price even if older (and willing to do that). I don't reallly get much beyond that if they opted to keep the dog then place. Or if if it was a return). But more power to the breeder for getting a bigger price if they can, I know breeding is super expensive.

A rescue is still a serious consideration. I don't want a "project dog" though. I am pretty picky on what I want and my contacts in rescue are not what they used to be (meaning ability to "foster to adopt" and thus properly screen before adopting). I do not have interest in a shelter dog that hasn't been properly assessed. There is a ton I want to do with my next dog. I am happy to make modifications to my plans so they fit the dog but I'd rather not throw them ALL in the garbage cuz the dog has some behavioral issues that mean they can't do any of them.
    Hi Tanya,
It varies as much as you can imagine, the rule of thumb is that there isn't a rule of thumb.

I think charging more is a field thing, and if they have been started and have a solid background and obedience they should cost more. In the bench bred circle, it varies more. In fact I am placing Miley's sister soon, to a family that has an older dog from me, for a nominal fee, because they are such an awesome family, and I know how lucky my 1 year old puppy will be. I wish you were closer you are an excellent candidate for a show dog washout.

I know what you want to do with your puppy, so I would start asking around at good breeders near you. I would much prefer you get a well bred, purpose bred, puppy/older puppy/young adult, than a "project puppy" from a rescue since you have had such heartache/heartbreak the last few years. Start talking to breeders, and send them detailed emails about yourself and your dog experience, the more the better, and what your plans are for the dog. I would be thrilled if I had someone like you looking for a socialized older puppy to compete with! My puppy would have a great life, and a puppy with my kennel name with all kinds of great titles!
Any chance you can travel to the USA for a puppy?

Lucky them! Your girls are awesome!

For the right dog i would travel. I guess the hard part would be making a commitment without meeting the dog to make the trip (guessing flying a non puppy would be risky so a long road trip!) I will start with reaching out to some breeders closer to home i guess, see where that brings me. I don't need a dog NOW (I think a few months from now would be better but you never know when the right dog will pop up).

    Thanks

I think you'll have to get in touch with 100 different breeders and probably get at least 75 different answers.

If you pay $20/day 5x per week, that's $400/month which is nearly $5,000 per year, so it might be worth it to get a started dog if you are looking just at price. I know you are also looking at the dog and type of training it receives and how that aligns with what you want. And, your options are going to be way more limited than a baby puppy. No matter what, that first year is super expensive!

I guess I just need to put the word out (contact breeders) and see what comes out if anything (and then look at price/dog analysis). I KNOW this is a long shot even without the price as I want something fairly specific. I do have some more "local" contacts but one is going thru some bad days with her senior lab and since it's not a rush, I figured i'd wait.

With an adult (or even 1yo) from known lines, you know SO much more about them. I look at Pippin who is now 14.5 mos old. I KNOW there is NOTHING wrong w/ her. In fact, I have to do a double take at times. I've been told numerous times by friends/ visitors they'd love to take her or Kanzi or whomever. And why? Because at that age, what you see is pretty much what you get. There's no way I'd sell any of my young adults for puppy price even if they didn't have any formal training and titles already. I know a lot about the genetics already.
