We were in Open B, and she chose order 2, in which the command discrimination order is down-sit-stand. For those who don’t know, the AKC recently changed the rules (effective 5/1) to get rid of the out of sight group stays in Open and substituted several new exercises instead. One of them is called “command discrimination” and starts with the dog sitting at heel. Upon orders from the judge, you need to have the dog change position (depending on the class from either a sit to a stand or from a sit to a down). Then they tell you to leave your dog, and you go 15 feet, turn around and wait for the judge to signal you to have the dog change position again. Then you leave the dog, and go another 15 feet where there is yet another position change, at which point you are supposed to return to the dog.
Open A always has the same order - stand-down-sit, which is similar to the signal exercise in Utility. In Open B there are 4 possible orders depending on which variation of Open B the judge has chosen to run that day. In both classes there is also now a 1 minute stay in the ring (always a sit in Open A, either a down or a sit in Open B) and a “stay-get your leash” exercise where you leave the dog (in a down in Open A, and either a sit or a down in Open B), go out of the ring to get your leash and then come back in and return to your dog.
We had 15 people entered, with one absence, so 14 people showed. Only 6 qualified, which was on the low side, but several of the NQ’s had nothing to do with the new exercises though. A few did - the most common error was dogs confusing a stand signal for a recall. One dog did fine with that and then didn’t hold the sit-stay on the get your leash portion.
Chloe did very well - she earned a 198.5 which was not only first in Open B, but also High In Trial. She also went High Combined, so it was a good day.
There were no dogs entered in Open A, which I think had to do both with people being afraid of the new exercises and also that this was one of the first outdoor shows of th year, too.
