    NQ in Novice "A"

We NQ'd when he decided he needed to investigate something on the floor during the down stay and he got up. Quite frankly he was pretty distracted the whole time, basically a continuation from Friday's rally trial.

The judge did tell me Brooks had a lot of potential and to keep working and not quit. She wasn't surprised when I told her he was just over 2 years old. No chance we'll be quitting, we'll keep working on it!

Well bummer, but then again a dog HAS to check out that enticing smell he found. You will get your Novice A when Team Brooks is ready-hopefully soon. Never give up.

    Young and intact. Good times!

Though Linus has always been a pretty focused puppy and dog, we have had other issues (of course! -- because they all do) and the mantra, "He'll be able to do at four what he couldn't do before." helped me remember to manage expectations, be patient and know that he's going to improve with experience and maturity.

You just have to keep at it. They are dogs, they aren't perfect. Some days the dust on the floor is just too interesting. We had trouble with the sit stays and Jed. He has his UKC CD but only 1 leg of his AKC CD. But Jed's main problem is not coming the first time I call during the recall.

You may want to just take a break now that it's warm, and practice at as many different places as you can. Do you do platform training? Sure helps to solidify the STAY (as in I don't want you to move a muscle!!!).
Coming down off a weekend obed workshop here w/ ~19 teams... so not caught up on my emails, but congrats on the Rally! Pic of Honey on platform as demo dog.

Yes I have two different platforms that I use. One similar to the one Honey's using and another that is smaller, just big enough for him to sit on and not move an inch. He absolutely knows what "STAY" means. I can put him in a sit stay in the field and walk 100 yards away, and he won't budge. He's also been very solid at training and show and goes.

Even if he had completed the stay and we had Q'd, I would not have been happy with his overall performance, as it was well below what he is capable of. I think it's just something we will have to work through. We had obedience class last night and he did really well, and I'm cutting him no slack. We will keep working and there is no doubt in my mind that he is capable of working at a pretty high level. He's shown it in the past, so I know he can do it.

Yup. There’s a reason my two 3 year olds only have BN’s! Hoping to bring them out in Novice in the next few months. Part of that is training two same age dogs while attempting an OTCH on another but even if that wasn’t the case, I usually plan on waiting until they are 3 and pretty much trained through Utility before attempting actual trials.

I'm starting to think waiting may be a good idea.

Yes! This is so smart. So many dogs out there learning bad habits in a trial and/or if they are not mentally ready, a negative CER to the ring, judge, trial itself. My trainer says not to trial until a dog is four (hard and fast rule for her Novice A students; more flexibility for experienced students). She does promote trialing in other venues where the dog is naturally driven, "fun stuff", to prepare for obedience trials (hunt tests, agility, dock diving, barn hunt, etc.).

Heeling is not our best exercise, so I'm so glad I only had to do novice three times! LOL!
