Back to nosework after a 3 week break.

The summer makes for a lot of breaks in training, and yesterday we were back at nosework, Cedar (my older dog) and I.

Sometimes I just have to laugh, I am mainly focussed on my young agility dog who is very serious and focussed and is all about working and working hard. Well when it comes to working with Cedar, it is the total opposite, she is just such a non serious clown and she is almost 10 years old. She finds the scents in boxes just fine, but she is all about jumping, scratching and kicking them around, and then if we stack the boxes, all the other dogs in class will calmly sniff them but Cedar comes along and bashes them right down. She definitely keeps the people in the class entertained.

Good part is when we were not doing box searchs last night, the instructor had hidden 7 scented qtips around a court yard and gave us 5 minutes to find as many as we could .... and Cedar came out on top for that one - wow, she actually focussed for 5 whole minutes.

So when it comes down to competing (big maybe, I am doing this activity purely for fun at the moment), our biggest challenge is going to be box searching as boxes are a huge game for her ... so much so she goes a little nuts.

Maxx does the same thing with stacked boxes or other objects in nosework class. His trainer just laughs and praises his enthusiasim! It is almost embasrassing when the other dogs are so calm in their searches and yours goes at it like a bull in a china shop. After almost a year of this I am used to Maxx's "style" of searching but the looks on a new class member's face the first time they see it really is funny! I am just glad our trainer is so positive with Maxx because he loves these classes so much.

I think it must be a lab thing .... as my trainer was not surprised by it at all, and said that behavior is "so lab", but yes, other people in the class love it because it is so dang funny .... and embarrassing! I really have to try not amp her up at all either as she will start to bark before her search.

Sounds like Cedar goes at it with gusto. Lots of fun and lots of success.
