    Getting started in Rally

Toby just got his CGC and we are having a blast training. I really want to continue with him and try a beginning Rally class and possibly compete in the future but can't find anything in Raleigh (closest class is over an hour away and starts at 8:30pm- Toby (and I) are tucked in bed by 10pm as we are up by 4:45am every day). Anyone in the Raleigh/Cary/Durham are know of rally classes being offered that isn't in Youngsville or Hillsborough?

I'm not familiar with the training scene in NC, but wanted to suggest that there is a Facebook Page called "Competition Obedience" that has tons of people from all over and might be worth joining and asking there ... if you're not on FB, let me know and I can ask for you.

Hope you can find something that works for you!

I'm not sure on where, but you can print off the signs and the descriptions from the AKC website. We did most of our training at home and then looked for matches to try a real course before entering a show. And if you can find a plain old obedience class for the next level past CGC, everything translates to rally anyway. I am getting my griff ready for rally. We went to a class last weekend, turned out she could do everything because we've practiced regular obedience already.

Now that I have finally tried Rally, I feel like 99% of it is testing how well the dog understands heel position (both maintaining and getting to it).

This pretty much sums it up. I think it's very easy for the dog if they do understand "heel" as a position relative to the handler. It's much harder to try and decipher what the signs actually mean. I've lost way more points than the dogs have, and have blown at least 3 perfect scores.

I highly recommend the Pocket Rally App ... it has all the signs, along with descriptions and a short video of someone (a judge) performing them. I found it to be really helpful!

If I had to say which exercises I would work while you try to find a class, make sure your dog understands heel position, down, stay (you will have to walk around the dog in sit and in down, later while standing), and return to heel right and left. If you can do those things outside of a rally class, you'll find the rest pretty easy. Oh and of course, they need to walk without trying to pull you down!

Signs, LOL. We did CKC and CARO rally. Some of the signs are different. I agree, basic obedience will really help to get you started in Rally. A class in O if you can't find Rally-O?
