I'm just now starting Stand Stay w/ Kanzi (8 mos) since we've gone from Rally to Obedience (combo Beginner thru Nov Obed) class.

Windy is so right. To be honest I'm not positive if you need a Stand in novice - I'd have to look it up, however it's a command we use in performances, and day to day work regularly. I teach it the exact same way as windy, sweeping hand in front of the nose and a "stay on your feet". if the dog begins to sit, a quick foot under the loin area to get them back up and say "stay on your feet". It is all non verbal now. A sit while walking in a heel was originally taught with a light tug back on the leash and right foot in front of the dog.

The foot under the loin IS NOT A KICK!!! just place it there and re command the stand and stay

I should also mention I don't use the word "stand", I use on your feet. The S in stand and the S in sit are similar sounding. If you have an eager dog that jumps the gun, they may sit, when really you want a stand because they hear you make the S sound. If that makes sense. I've always taught it that way.

ok I confirmed, stand is advanced. why they hell did she has us try stand!? ok scratch that, I have more than enough work to do to concentrate on something we won't need. Sigh. ridiculous class.

Stand IS absolutely on my radar and I will get back to it but i have so much homework to do for class i won't be able to really work on it. gonna work on heeling, sits, downs, sits and heeling

Keep at it!! Consider using an AH-AH and then command - this will grab their attention if ah-ah is used as a "correction"

Yeah, but you can't say Ah-Ah for a correction in a trial. None of our judges have allowed it and usually caution ahead of time. Because we can't say it in a trial our trainer urged us to find something else to say or use.

OUr RAlly classes had people and dogs at different levels. We were all working on Advanced while still in Novice trials. Most of us came from obedience or agility classes before we did the Rally and that probably helped. Maybe that's the case in your class?

I wish we could go back to Rally. The classes were fun and everyone truly enjoyed seeing each other's dog work and progress and we all helped each other if we could.

You're kidding, right? Yikes. That's pretty bad if for Rally. I have no idea if I've said that in a trial, or if I just say "Wrong answer, let's try again!". (as if the dog really understands that....lol).

No, I'm not kidding. In Rally we are allowed to encourage the dog but not to chastise it and Ah-Ah has been used for so long as a warning to our dogs that we were advised to just get used to not saying it at all. I know I have said it anyway and not got caught. I was warned once when I called Oban a dirty, rotten stinker and I got away with it but the judge told me lots of other judges might even have excused me for it. I must have laughing when I said it or she might have at least docked me points.

I hiss. "SSSSssss" Nobody has heard me yet but I think it might not be well received either.

LOL, years ago I read that words that start with "F" are good to warn your dog because you tend to blow out a puff of air into their face and they don't like it and they stop doing what you didn't want them to do. Go ahead, I dare you all, say it out loud in class or a trial. PHooey. What? Was that not the word you were expecting?

I guess Canadian judges just don't have much of a sense of humor!
Funny story, a gal who is very straight laced was running agility w/ her Papillon here a couple years ago. She said Freck! (her dog's name was Freckles). She got whistled off and turned to the judge dumbfounded as to what for... Judge thought she said a different F word. Boy was that judge ever embarrassed!

I know you can't say it during training however when teaching a dog in a heel or foose I usualy tell people to use an ah ah and just the hand signal, after the dog understands the hand signal begin to train with no AH AH and only hand signals - this is just how I was taught. It probably makes sense to use something different though haha
