Talked to my trainer tonight, for some reason there are no agility fun runs by us

One thing I would recommend is to go to a few trials, without your dog first. Watch and get a sense of what goes on, and what level dogs need to be able to perform at to be successful. Make note of any distractions, etc., that you think might trouble your dog, and go home and work on it. Once you feel your dog is capable of handling everything you've seen at a trial, then go for it!

I'm friends with a number of people who currently compete, and being so close to Purina Farms there are frequent trials so I might have to go. I sort of feel like what we do in class is probably more complex than a novice level trial, but would like to see.
LOL, I've been asking that about Rally with Grizz. I ended up putting him in an 8 week class and after 2 classes, I can already gauge his level of ability. I think by the time we are done with class, I should be able to do Novice no problem and maybe even Advanced. I am aiming for our April shows.

Yes they do need to be AKC registered. But if you don't have papers you can get a PAL number on your dog .... I am assuming you can still compete at Lab Nationals if you believe your dog is truly a lab, but I would call AKC and ask. I do believe a lot of the agility people are going to go this year, so it should be a very good turn-out.
Yes PAL dogs can compete at Lab nationals. You should go! We might if they figure out how to get hunt tests or field trials offered!
I did RN at 6mos w/ my current pup Jen. Should not be a problem. She earned her title all w/ placements in the B class, despite her age.
