Do you think it's to soon?

A friend of mine just posted that she is taking a fly ball class she posted some videos and it looks like so much fun. Benelli is super fast and is obsessed with tennis balls. I feel it would be good bonding time. I'm going to sit in and watch the class next week without him see if he can handle it since it's off leash. He hasn't had formal obedience classes tho.

Most classes that I am aware of where there is off-leash time (agility, for example) require off-leash control, especially with other dogs in the area. If he has that, you should be OK. I'm guessing the instructor will want to have that discussion with you before she allows you to register?

At our training facility you have to complete one of the obedience classes before you are eligible for the funner classes. If you are interested in it, talk to the trainers. They might make an exception or have you take an obedience class first. It should be fun regardless!

it may be worth an obedience class first just to see how he does in a different environment.

I have taken flyball classes. the first thing I will say is they are all over the map as far as quality and proper management. The good ones I took would use gates and if needed a long line so a dog doesn't take off (both indoor and outdoor). We did some outdoor classes and most dogs used a long line for safety. It's good for bonding. Make sure to work on proper form especially for a big dog - too many dogs are allowed to just slam into the box and it hurts to watch. A good swimmers turn will save the dog from major back/other issues down the line.

even a dog with decent recall could be a bit out of element in a new environment with new dogs and all the smells. the long line and / or baby gates ensures they don't "practice" going to visit and do as they please.

I think I'm going to sit in on the class watch my friend participate with her dog and sign Benelli up for an obedience class with his trainer. I'm not fond of the instructor who teaches the obedience classes at this facility. I have taken other classes here its just her I don't really care for. That way Benelli even tho it will be on lead will get used to working around other dogs. I do know they use gates for the fly ball class.
