I hear you about dogs and heat. I have a MH who is... how to say this... rather particular about how she likes her environmental conditions. She doesn't like to work in the heat. (She turns from a labrador retriever into a pig. Ugh!) and she really doesn't like cold water on cool days. (Oh, mom! Do I have to???)

Rocket dog however, she works hard and fast and depends upon me to call her off if necessary. We were doing water T today and I felt 6 short swims was all she needed. Her teeth were clattering and she was shivering but she was desperate to go back in, especially when she saw another dog going for a bumper.

I know we have some hard chargers in our training group that we absolutely have to watch for heat problems. They will go until they drop, literally.

You're right. You have to study your dog and know the way they respond to conditions.

That'd be Envy (Kanzi's mom) who would go until she dropped in the field... Actually Tango and Envy's mom Mata had heat stroke a few yrs ago, so I really do worry about it.

As Anne says in one of her posts, a B match should be run just like a trial for people who enter it to be scored, BUT - we had only one person who did not enter FEO (for exhibition only) and for the FEO folks, our judge allowed them to do pretty much anything except for harsh corrections (so food, toys, guides, etc.). You can enter FEO even if you don’t already have the title. Our judge was an experienced OTCH trainer who may be applying for her judging license in the next few years (they need to have judge a couple B matches to get it), so if you can find someone in that position it can work out well.

And Anne - congratulations by the way!!!
We had huge discussions about opening up our obedience/rally to all breed, limited, or even just retrievers, but it did not fly. People still complained that it was costing the club to put on the obedience/rally portion of the event at our specialty. People were adamant about not opening it up to all breed, so at the end of the day, we voted on one: open it up to all breed (whatever that might look like) or just support obedience/rally. The latter option won so now we don't worry about it.

Most Lab Specialty Shows are losing money in the NW. It's not the fault of obed/rally in our club (PSLRA) as we can get by w/ one judge per day for both. We too voted re: opening it up for other breeds but most were against it as it'd take the "special" feeling away. Our club makes most of its money on the agility trials, and normally a little bit on the hunt tests, but lose w/ the specialty. Our local all breed club has had its share of losses too-- shows are expensive to put on.

I am hoping to get my girls into a Sheltie club's obed/rally trial that is open to all breeds on the 2nd day but was told by the super we may not get in depending on how many Shelties still enter obed/ rally. They are limited to 5 hrs of judging for each as I recall. Hope we can go as this facility is a dirt horse arena and my dogs usually do well in that cooler environment.

My previous post was about our sanctioned match, not the Specialty trial but as it happens we just decided to try opening the trial to all-breeds this fall. We do back-to-back specialties on a Thursday/Friday, but we can’t do it on the Friday as we are within 100 miles of another show-giving club. We just now decided to do it on the Thursday this fall so we will see how it works out. I’ve shown at both GSD and Doberman Specialities and it was fine. I think on a Thursday (with people having to take off work), outdoors, we won’t have to worry about exceeding any entry limits but we can of course accept Labs first.

There was a lot of resistance from the conformation people in the club, but with the match, I refused to run Obedience unless they opened it and they did, and it “saved the Match” as we had a nice entry which was bigger than the breed entry (which wouldn’t have covered the costs).

The Sheltie specialty is on a Friday, just before a big show in W.WA which unfortunately, a local is hired to judge... and I can't show under him due to taking a class from him this winter. So I am hoping we get into this specialty all the more. I too have done the GSD specialty in the past but oh my, that was CRAZY w/ all the double handlers blowing whistles and duck calls (!), ringing bells, you name it. Interesting though!

Believe it or not, one of the objections was apparently “what about the breeds that aren’t as nice as our Labradors?”. Umm ... first of all, these are OBEDIENCE dogs that are used to going to trials and staying under control and second, at our Specialty, Obedience and Breed are separated by a large distance and the Obedience people almost never go near the breed people (who do tend to let their dogs mill around willy-nilly without paying attention to them, which is why I don’t usually bring Chloe over there). Plus, the worst incident I ever witnessed at a dog event was between two conformation labs - an intact male went after and injured a puppy bitch with little/no provocation. Oy.

I’ve been to many all-breed conformation shows with obedience trials and the obedience people usually prefer to keep their dogs far away from the conformation judging. I guess the conformation people in our club have never noticed that.

Yea, like the Newfie who broke away from his owner and jumped the Cane Corso at our match last weekend. LOL. The Newf was the only one doing the growling, but oh... "he's FRIENDLY!!!". Same Newf who jumped Kanzi at class (when she was in the ring working, no less). Nope, it's just all about stupid owners who aren't watching/controlling their brats... Sigh.
