Been training a bit w/ Kanzi (13 mos old) in Rally Advanced and Beginner Novice classes this spring. She earned her RN last fall at 6 mos and 8 days old w/ placements each time, but w/ her age and adolescence and all, it's always interesting. Ends up she has a fantastic work ethic and is pretty much all business once we get going on the course. However, we learned on Sat at our B match that I need to work on our ring entries as she really thought she should greet the judge for our first class, Beg Nov. It was a warm sunny day on pretty dry grass (we are under drought conditions here), so I knew that would also be a good test for a young black dog. She held up great! Other than a little forging/ crowding on the Fig 8 (which I knew we needed more real work on), and 2 pts off on the regular heeling, she did a nice job. Ended up w/ a 192.5 which was good for a First place by a pretty long margin and 2 pretty ribbons which we donated back to the club.
Rally Advanced was after lunch and it was already ~80F by the time we ran. The course was one of the easier Advanced courses I've seen in awhile. 90 degree pivots both directions, but no 180 lefts (which she can do great most of the time)-- just pretty much the basics, though w/ a broad jump which many folks hadn't seen. Since she's already doing most of the Open level work in obed, that was not a problem for us. Anyhow, much to my surprise, guess who got another First place? With a perfect score of 100, no less! I decided I'd better keep those ribbons and score sheet for evidence since it may not happen again.
With our club all breed show / trials at the end of the month at a different location, plus another trial in W. WA the next Friday, the heat is on.... Here's hoping she can hold her little brain together for a busy 7 days then. She had what I suspect was a "2 month warning" about a week or 2 ago when the brain falls all apart, warning me of possible pending hormones (she's not had a season yet). Hang in there for me, Kanzi!
Now Tango, that was a whole "nother" story. I swear she NQd every Open exercise except the retrieves and long down, lol. I didn't bother looking at her score sheet as it was obviously too hot for her and she was not a happy camper. That's why we do matches though, to find out what dog can tolerate what conditions. She had just done a nice job in the bldg w/ a solid qualifying score ~2wks ago.
Another positive of the day was that the new babies (now 14 wks old) got to attend and watch part of the Rally w/ a couple of my friends'/ puppy owners kids toward the end of the day (they slept thru most of the morning in their crates, lol!). And those folks' girl (2 yo choc from me) also took a first place in her RN class too w/a 98! So it was a fun and productive day all around for us. Lots of reasons to smile... Anne

That is so cool... Very impressive what you are doing with your labs! They are all fabulous! Love that first picture...

Hey, Windycanyon, not to hijack your thread, but how does your club like to run your B-matches, as far as obedience and rally? I've been to two of our B-matches. The first time I was so new I can't even tell you much about it, the second time was last year and I honestly can't remember much about that one either... All I know is that there are usually about ten entries (and that would be a MOST EXCELLENT year for us -- it's hardly worth setting up the ring). That said, it's pretty casual.
I want to be able to school and praise my dogs as it is a match, and I'm not ready to trial them at the levels they are getting ready to compete at. I know they are supposed to run the sanctioned B-match like a trial. Another option would be to enter classes that they have already titled in. I don't care if I "NQ" at a match, obviously. When I go to matches I usually just choose what I want to do, and sometimes I put the timer on, practice ring entries, have a party in the ring, throw treats, and leave. And, usually our obedience club and training facility matches have experienced people as "judges" and in one case, an actual judge who takes lessons with my trainer. At our B-match it's someone who is not experienced enough to help.
What are the "rules"? Or is it just a case of what the B-match "judge" wants to do?
That is awesome, congratulations! Kanzi is absolutely gorgeous and those babies, I just want to smooch them! My Maxx agrees with your Tango, working in high temps is not for him. He just melts and pants himself in to a distracted mess.

If you go online to the AKC site, the various matches are all outlined there (at least they used to be, the new website is horrible imo!). An AKC Sanctioned B/ OB match is per normal AKC regs just as if it were a trial. It needs legal rings set up, pre-entries (day of entries are accepted as well), a qualified person judging (normally this person should be titled in all of the levels offered). For the exhibitor, no extra praise, no corrections, no training in the ring and no choice as to order of exercises, or what exercises they wish to do (just like a trial). The only option our club offered Sat was to enter as "Exhibition Only" and not be scored but just have the judge present and going thru the motions.
The C match is for that-- more of a show n go where you get to have a little more leeway depending on what the club outlines. We had a C match at the training bldg last month, but only praise and very light (verbal) corrections were allowed, along w/ retry on anything you needed/ wanted to do over.
We also offered conformation Sat though that was rather poorly attended (too bad my puppies were ~3 wks too young). The obed/ rally match had a pretty decent entry w/ 3 in utility, 2 of us in Open, several in Nov and Beg Nov and at least 10 in RN, 5 or so in RA and about the same for Exc.
PS, Google gave me this link: https://images.akc.org/pdf/rulebooks/RESANC.pdf

Congratulations! She is funny with her puppy sit. It is almost as though she is saying, "I q'd and I placed, so it is too darn hot to work the sit and hold!" All are cuties!
windycanyon (05-12-2015)
Pretty sure she was exhausted after doing 2 classes and spending pretty much all day down at the park. Then to have to do pictures when we got home (after they all played!).... lol. She really is still a puppy.
Thanks everyone for the congrats. I'm still in recovery mode here after the bad winter we had. Dog training / events seem to be the best medicine right now for all of us. The puppies have now been to a health clinic, 2 obed / rally matches, and a hunt test even. We may do a water training day this weekend too. Just have to keep busy here... Anne

Thanks. I looked it up, but it's all so...official. It made my head hurt.
I did talk to someone in the club and can compete in classes I've already titled in as "exhibition only".
We don't do C-matches in the Lab club, but I go to plenty of fun matches with the obedience club and local kennel clubs.
In terms of entries, our breed club was having really low entries so we opened it up to all-breeds this time and had a nice entry (don’t know which kind of club you are talking about). I also publicized it a bit more than we had in the past.
As Anne says in one of her posts, a B match should be run just like a trial for people who enter it to be scored, BUT - we had only one person who did not enter FEO (for exhibition only) and for the FEO folks, our judge allowed them to do pretty much anything except for harsh corrections (so food, toys, guides, etc.). You can enter FEO even if you don’t already have the title. Our judge was an experienced OTCH trainer who may be applying for her judging license in the next few years (they need to have judge a couple B matches to get it), so if you can find someone in that position it can work out well.
And Anne - congratulations by the way!!!
