    B-Match - oh boy!

The club had our B-match today.

Linus' turn at novice obedience was weird. For some reason he was stressed in the ring, and I'm assuming it's because we don't often practice outdoors. He was the only dog to qualify in obedience so we won HIT by default. I donated my ribbons back but kept the HIT as it very well may be the only one I ever win! I feel like I shouldn't have taken him, but on the other hand, it was good to see where we're at with the distractions while in the ring. I know what we need to work on.

Mr. Personality, aka Sam, was coming out off his break since July when he got his RN. I had been focusing on Linus' obedience and was going to work with one dog, but then decided to continue Sam's rally career. He's trained to excellent and Linus won't be in the obedience ring for at least another year, so thought it would be good timing. We were about to start class again when he hurt his foot. So, he's been to two classes since July and is still practically tripping over himself with excitement because he's so happy to work again (though I think he's more excited over the cheese, to be honest). One of the exercises was the off-set figure-eight with the bowls. We've done it before, but it's been awhile and it has always been pretty tough for him to resist. He was BESIDE HIMSELF when he saw the bowls and took off to check them out right away, bouncing all the way back to me when he realized they were empty. He thought he'd hit the jackpot!

Linus' littermate sister won best dog. She won best puppy last year. A few of his other littermates were there for conformation. He just towers over them and is definitely the livliest of the bunch!

No food in the dishes??? Not at our B match... they had CHEESE!!!
Sometimes the grass (esp at parks) have some real smells. No doubt about it, you have to practice at many locations w/ young dogs. A few of us set a rally course up at a park earlier this week where guys were kicking a soccer ball around and kids were playing w/ a football. Kanzi about came unglued at first, and I did reprimand her as she should know by now when it's time to work. She straightened right up after that and did great. Thankfully our show site won't have soccer and football and such going on!

If there were food in the bowls, I would have scratched. Maybe not six months ago, but Sam was definitely not ready for that kind of excitement in his life!

There's only one obedience show outside that I've been to, and that's our specialty, which I will never show at again. Blazing sun doesn't bode well for my boys. I tend to practice at the sites where the obedience clubs hold their events, and there are plenty around me. He actually was great outside of the ring, now that I think about it. It was inside the ring where he fell apart.

Well, you WILL have food in the dishes at a real trial for Rally Adv. Or toys.... lol. the toys (I learned a few years ago) were FAR harder to predict than the food. I had a young litter at the time and dang, I had some of the SAME toys at home!!! LOL. Can you say BREAK??? Thankfully it was just a 3pt out of control (retrieve to hand, hand over to the judge) issue. Still imprinted in my mind...

Yeah, we've worked with it, just not since last Spring/Summer, maybe? We trained to Excellent off leash. There are a couple things he needs to improve upon before trialing. I don't plan to trial him until winter because it's too iffy in the summer for him. He's easily over-heated. He's SOOOO excited to be working again, absolutely beside himself, so gotta get back into the swing of things again with him. The way he is even heeling right now is like "Mom, mom, mom, mom! Look at me! I'm heeling! OMG! Heeling! Mom, mom, mom, mom! OMG! What do we do now? What do you wanna do? Huh? Huh? Huh?" I appreciate his effort and enthusiasm, really, I do. I'm just looking forward to him dialing things back a notch again!

It's a fun match that is run like a trial. I believe clubs that have specialties are required to have one.

You guys should try the livestock arenas we show in all the time, those are a pain! We had a show one year where they had pigs out the day before for auction, then packed the dirt and had the dog show. I think our obedience group is going to start visiting various barns around town and asking if we can train in their arenas for an hour or two.

We do use arenas at several county fairgrounds for many of our shows and never had a problem! However, now that I've got a bird dog, the pigeons living in the rafters might be another story...

No, it's a requirement for AKC education etc credits for all AKC MEMBER clubs. So it applies to All breed clubs as well. Look at it as practice / warm up for the show hosting/ AKC member clubs. (The AKC "membership" consists of clubs, not individuals as some people seem to think-- it's a "Club of Clubs", in their words).
