I love the McDevitt book. Helped me control my boy, I hope you like it.
Me too, i want to try it all. But when it comes to "deciding" - I don't! I go with whatever class works with my schedual and I like the trainer/facility. It's one round of classes. I "fell into" many classes/sports just randomly really. The ones that click we keep going (and sometimes I just push thru - I did flyball with my totally no-drive lab, took two years of training to get him competing haha - which is slooooow for flyball).
For now I have a faciilty and training that works works for me for agility so we are sticking to that. I FINALLY found a place that does dock diving (a local-ish facility with a dock) and my younger dog to it so we're doing that for the summer as well. Rally-O we do on and off, especially in the winter months when we break from agility.
I did therapy visits with my dog. It is definately a temperment thing for the dog, but indeed maybe someone for when your pup matures.

I compete in flyball, agility, and dock diving. It is just fun with my dogs and each dog has their favorite of those, but all all just want to play whatever and whenever I chose. One also does therapy dog work. I think we are lucky that this breed is so versatile.
I also like Leslie McDevitt's book, particularly the puppy one.
