puppy classes in my area - how to find

What is the best way to find puppy obedience classes in my area? I knew of classes in IL when I first got Lily, but 11 years ago it seemed easier to find. Now that we are in DC and it's a bigger area, I'm not sure where to start looking. I can google it, but I want to find a "good" class from referrals. Should I check with our previous vet? I'm looking now so that when it's our time next year for a puppy, I will already know where to go, and where to find their schedules/availability

See if you can find a local kennel club or an obedience club. Better trainers.

I believe the AKC will send recommendations on clubs once you register your pup, but I agree w/ JenC above. I'd avoid the chain pet store trainers based on what I see locally!

I'd go back to this man in a heartbeat...our classes were held in Ellicott City/Columbia, though, just off Route 100.

Day-One Dog Training by Howard Weinstein

Very nice man...knows what he's doing. I took Danny for socialization but his training techniques were mostly what I'd used...and nothing that flew in my face. He's very gentle with the dogs.

Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers

There are four or five links to U.S. training organizations at the page above. I have no idea why part of this is underlined, it means nothing.

Since you have time, once you find a few options, see if they will let you monitor a class or two.

This is a great idea! It helped me weed out a couple I know I would not have been happy with and find an awesome trainer that has become a wonderful friend.

another thing you can do once you have a list, is find the schools on facebook and see whawt kind of info/links they put out. It'll help you assess what kind of training and training methods they encourage

If your breeder is somewhat local they may be able to help (or maybe have a previous puppy buyer in the area).

i'd also ask your vet. i got the best trainer from mine even tho he has the most untrained dogs. he just "cant".
but she's great and i used her with a few of mine.
and then took the class with her too.
