    Post stance in figure-8

I was recently at a match and one of the figure-8 posts had her hands in her hoodie pockets, nose height to my dog. I asked if she wouldn't mind crossing her arms instead. I was showing a very young dog who isn't ready for that much distraction. She was a little defensive and said that a steward can do whatever they want and hands in pockets is permissible and that I should get used to it. Yikes! I nicely explained that I wanted to set the dog up for success and she obliged.

I have been thinking about it and I don't remember ever watching or participating in a show or match where stewards didn't have their arms crossed. I keep forgetting to ask my trainer about it. I'm curious about others' experiences?

If the dogs are small, Sheltie or Cavalier size, stewards often have their arms down at the side, as the dog would have to jump up to sniff. Clasped in front or in a hoody pocket on a frosty morning is fairly common. The regs are about the HANDLER's arm and hand positions, not those of the stewards, if I remember correctly.

Now you know one more thing for which to train or proof! Here are a few more ideas:

Charlotte is right - there are no rules about it, although some judges are stricter at expressing a preference than others.

Thanks, and I agree about proofing and all, for sure! Usually in fun matches, in my experience, regardless of the rules the judges and stewards will oblige the participant (within reason, LOL). I was also curious to know other arm stances, as I'd never noticed anything other than arms folded, but then again I have never really taken much notice. I will have to print that list for each dog and start checking things off. Some of those are going to be expensive proofing exercises!

No way that you have to do them all! Do what seems reasonable for your dog at each stage.

Thank goodness for fun matches is all I have to say. I just discovered kiddie pools will be available at a show I was considering attending this summer and am hoping they are far, far away from the rings!
