I admit I am getting overwhelmed by all the required commands in agility. I am trying to remember to write things down as I have a terrible memory and I know some trainers will have more commands while others may use one word for a few things...
how do you manage all the commands? One jump can equal so many options : (jump, around, push, check check, shhh....)
Is this an issue with other sports? It's something that's been an issue in trick training as well, i'd forget what word I was using when starting to train a new behaviour and having to be more inventive on picking words!

haha i won't tell you how often I get teh "t's" mixed up :P pen just goes where i point but that won't work all the time. Tunnel, no Teeter NO TIRE! but then you have like 10+ commands srictly for one jump based on how they need to take it

Copying from arentspowell we used:
"Over" - jump JUMP for obvious reasons. Over is too close to Oban. But I got flak for saying JUMPIT, two syllables. Arrggghhhh, so is Over two syllables
"Tire" This also said as if it was two syllables, ty er.
"Walk it" - Dog walk LOG ON, we started on logs in the bush. Two syllables but apparently this is ok here.
"Charge" - A frame FRAME
"Weave"
"Chute"
"Tunnel" THROUGH
"Teeter"
"Table" Used now at the Vet's on the weigh scale.
I started Through on my own at home too and when we got to class some other ladies like it, saying it was a change from all the other "t"s that were followed by a vowel.
JUmpit was vertical or horizontal jumps. However it did become BIG Jumpit for horizontal.
ETA: Oh wait, there were lots more commands for direction: WAY, HERE, BACK I've forgotten some.

I never found it necessary to have a huge vocabulary when I did agility. Actually have you ever watched how many have a "point and click" handling method? Minimal voice! Just body language in many cases like handling in herding or in the field.
I subscribe to the KISS method w/ all the venues, and try to find common denominators amongst them. I admit to getting rather burned out w/ everyones' different philosophies w/ wraps, serpentines, etc in agility. Seems to me that courses have become designed to be more handler challenging than for the dogs. The suggested courses diagrammed in the reg book were a joke even 10 yrs ago....

Too many commands won't work for me as I can't get the right word at at the right time :P so yes I need KISS. Pen absolutely goes by my body more than the word (thus the "she does the right thing even when i say the wrong thing". I guess that works as long as I can "get" to the spot to send her VS stay back and send from farther away.
The trainer at the seminar mentioned that yes courses have changed leading to more commands/techniques. honestly i've never competed even in a fun run so what do I know haha.
Yep i've been working on serpentines and wraps! the serpentines is when I got lost at the seminar the trainer there also uses a different philosphy/word than my trainer (i've been with the same trainer from day 1 with penny). I was texting her asking "what word did you use for this again?" haha

I agree with this.
I use "Jump" on anything with a jump, this includes the tire, "Walk it" Teeter and Dog Walk, "A Frame" for the "A frame", "Weave" for weaves.
Then I use the word Go before a command if I am sending him out away from me. Go Jump and I motion for a jump in the distance.
I use the word Wrap If he needs to come in on the opposite side of a jump.
However, 90% of the time I just shut up and don't say a word and run with Hemi, he knows what to do. This actually improved our performance drastically. He wasn't focused on what was coming out of my mouth and could just run the course beside me.

Funny thing. Today I had a call from a 2yo's pup owner/ handler. She does everything w/ her boy from conformation to field work to obed & rally to agility to therapy. She hurt herself this am, so had to hand her boy off (did I mention he's 2 and intact and high drive???) to a 20 yo wonder child handler. They Qd in his debut in Open Jumpers just fine, even w/ some traps/ bad weave entries. And came in well under time...
I used to let one of my pup owners run Mata at the upper levels when my back was giving me fits and despite us using different commands for certain things (he'd try to be consistent), she was fine too! Anyhow, I think it has a lot more to do w/ body posturing in agility.

sounds good - i'll chat with my trainer and keep it to the minimum required terms. like I said, too many terms will just mess ME up in the end :P
