    Ratting Sports (barn/brush hunt) Seminar

Last night i did a ratting sport seminar - and finally knw the difference between barn and brush haha. I was expecting a bit of a nightmare given the number of dogs in a small space and some feedback i heard from the previous seminar but it was great Lots of waiting but that's part of the game with these working seminars.

Penny was on good behaviour and i had no issues managing her (always something i worry about - but i also give her a worse reputation than she should have with my anxiety haha). She took to it quite nicely I think. She wasn't crazy but took right to the job. Her first marker is to lick the container haha (then body posture change/pawing/licking). I could probably easily get her beginner titles in both barn and brush if the chance comes up. it's fun having a dog that sorta does things (dock diving, lure coursing, ratting, agility has been a work in progress but more because of my own learning curve). The obedience sports are a bit harder (we cable at rally-o).

I brought Rocky. the issue with Rocky is he works for food. so when I "mark" a good behaviour he looks at me for food :P (VS pen likes the game - though in agility we are having issues with this). It's nice to have an activity for an older or less mobile dog. he enjoyed the outing. Given he ignored the mice and rats in my apartments years ago I wasn't sure he'd even sniff them haha. But he did. So he did the sniffing around thing and would sorta hover at the rat container but as soon as you praised his interest he would back off and look at me. Then again this could be addressed with some training.

Unfortunately there isn't must opportunity for any of the ratting sports here (unless we drive 1.5-2 hours). There is one event we are going to that will have ratting so depending on time and $$ i may sign penny up. If not this year, in the future!

sounds like a fun day! I have this and scent work in my mind for "retirement" sports for Scout - he just loves getting out and being at shows etc that i hate to think he won't be able to do anything as he gets older and less able to do the jumps or big water/field things
