i read somewhere recently in an oooollllldddddd retriever training book recently about "training all the enthusiasm out of the dog" - the author was telling someone that had asked for his advice for a young dog that was exuberant to a fault, and the author was saying that he'd seen far too many dogs with "the fun of it beaten out of them" - they still retrieved, but "there was no joy in their work" and he told the fellow that he hoped he had the patience to teach the dog using its own excitement to wind up with a dog who "was a joy to watch, he was so happy to be working"

Perspective is a very interesting thing. As 3 different folks what they've all just seen, and you'll get 3 differing answers. When you get more than one saying the same thing, its very likely its happened as those people have said. I find it interesting watching to see what different people "see", and how it's influenced by their experiences/training beliefs/etc. Even those attempting to find "the dog's perspective" vary wildly. Training is never dull, or routine. The more I try, the more i see this. I believe this is part of the reason we see people well into their 70's still competing in dog sports - its never the same, and there's always a new challenge to meet.

I'm so sure this is what goes on in my dogs head. Maybe Im crazy but I'm sure they understand more than they think we do.

No one approach works 100% of the time. There is a local "pro" field trainer who has a 50% wash out rate from his program. If the dogs do not conform to his way, his schedule, they are done. It's pretty obvious to me it's not a dog issue.

After 4 1/2 years, I still haven't figured out what makes Sophie tick. She has come a long way in 5 months, but she can still be very stubborn when she chooses. I think a lot of it boils down to a basic lack of drive, especially when it comes to retrieving. It's ok, we'll keep working on it, and I'll keep it as fun as I possibly can for her.
