View Full Version : 2 more seniors in danger, HELP!
Joe Maringo 04-11-2007, 07:25 AM I received this email yesterday,
Hi,
I am a volunteer with several rescues in the Alabama. I have two senior labs that were owner surrender because they were to old to breed anymore. They said the labs were only 7 years old, the male (black) may only be seven but the female(chocolate) I think is older. These dogs have had very poor vet care, and they were so skinny when I got them. They are doing good right now, but I cannot keep them I have 14 dogs now in my 1 acre backyard. These two are so special , but I cannot get a rescue to take them. I have emailed and called everyone I know and noone is willing to take them. I know you are too far away from me to help, but I was hoping maybe you knew someone that would. My "rescue" group they were turned in to wants to put them down, they say they are not adoptable because they look bad. I SAY NO !!! I will do anything to keep them alive. I am doing all I can. Both are spayed/neutered and utd on shots, housebroken and walk well on a leash.
If you know anyone, or any rescue I might can contact please let me know. These are wonderful seniors with so much life left to live and they are begging for love and attention. I will attach their pics and I have more pics if you want them.
Thank you for any advice you have

I am not 100% sure, but I am assuming that Sugar is the chocolate (as in brown sugar)

And Smokey is the black. Smokey also seems to have some white on his neck, may have been some injury there at one time, but I don't know that for sure either.
So I am coming to my friends here once again for any help you may be able to offer. I would hate to see these guys put down just for being old. It is obvious that there is still a lot of spark in their eyes and all they need is a good home. I am eilling to do whatever is need to help get these two into good homes.
Because I just took in Hank, my limit of seniors is full right now. I could keep them for a few days if needed while they where transported. They are in GA. right now. If it helps, I might be setting up a transport from GA to NY for a chessie soon. I am sure one or both could ride along if needed.
HaleyJo03 04-11-2007, 07:38 AM Joe:
Let me contact Elena with Lab Friends of the South in Atlanta, GA to see if they can help them. I know they are desperate for foster homes but since they are already in GA let me see if I can get some help. They shouldn't be put down because they are seniors. They both still look like they have a lot of pep in their step.
Shaqpuppy 04-11-2007, 10:42 AM I wonder if Sugar and Red are related

Now that would be GREAT!! Please keep us posted if you can help. I'm still trying to find an avenue for these two.
Samantha 04-11-2007, 12:22 PM Those pictures are breaking my heart knowing that a so-called rescue group wants to put them down. I just don't know if a 2 year old boy and a 3 month old pup would be too much for them. Although many "mama dogs" I've met are very loving of young people and animals.
Joe Maringo 04-12-2007, 05:11 PM I have a location on the two dogs. They are in Montevallo, Al. about 60 miles south of Birmingham. I have not gotten the atlas out yet, so I don't know how exactly where that is.
Don't know if you saw my post about dislexia. I don't know why, but somehow my eyes saw Atlanta in the original post, not Alabama. Sorry for the confusion about saying they where in GA. I am going to have to start proofreading things 10 or 15 times before posting about them.
Samantha 04-12-2007, 05:16 PM Thats still not too far... 4-5 hours... maybe 6? With transport help I would still love to help these poor old guys out, especially if no one else can/will. Are there any fees involved do you know? How would I arrange transport?
Karen519 04-12-2007, 06:10 PM Susan (Miskeira) on here is a transport coordinator and if you asked her I am sure she would help.
There are also volunteers on this forum in the TRANSPORT section-you will see VOLUNTEERS by state.
Susan's e-mail is: miskeira@sbcglobal.com.

I don't think there are any fees. If the rescue is considering putting them down they must not have too much invested in them.
It has been a little tricky to get in contact with the foster, but I will see what more I can find out.
Samantha 04-12-2007, 06:35 PM OK, well I've looked over the transport section and I will need some info if you get in touch with the rescue... how they travel, exact location, can rescue help at all with transport and when needs to be transported. I guess if I can get that basic info I can contact Susan and get her help in mapping out a transport schedule and finding volunteers to help.
Joe Maringo 04-15-2007, 06:59 AM Just a little teaser for everyone. Things might be looking up for these two. More info to come :thumb4:

Joe & Aleta:
Here are some Senior Rescues in Alabama, in case you need them.
Alabama Animal Rescue (http://www.aarescue.org/)
(http://www.homeranimals.com/)Animals advertised on Alabama Animal Rscue site are at local veterinarians office, in a foster home or in a shelter in Alabama. All adoptions through AARescue must be approved. We take pet adoptions very seriously. These precious animals have been through a lot so, we try to make sure the next home will be permanent and long lasting.
Metro Animal Shelter, Tuscaloosa
(http://www.metroanimalshelter.org/index.html)Metro Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization funded by the City of Tuscaloosa, the City of Northport, and the Tuscaloosa County Commission. Along with these funds, we also receive donations, redemptions and adoption fees. All animals regardless of their age are taken in by us. We are proud to be a member of the Humane Society of the United States as well as the American Humane Association, the Alabama Humane Federation, and the Alabama Animal Control Association.

Joe Maringo 04-17-2007, 04:09 PM We have a couple of really good offers for the dogs. One in particular where they would stay together and be able to live their lives out. I am doing some detective work and making sure it is a good and safe environment for them. The plan is to try for a forever home first, and if all else fails them we might have to resort to everyones generous offers of fostering temporarily. Thanks everyone for keeping them in your thoughts!
luvmychocolate 04-18-2007, 11:33 AM I just wanted everyone to know they are both doing really good. If I didn't have so many foster's right now, they could stay here without any problem. I am just over my limit for my area, and the neighbors are complaining about the noise. These are sweet loving dogs . Sugar is laying at my feet right now and Smokey is asleep on my daughters leg in the den. You can rest assured though I will protect them and take care of them as long as I need to.
All of the rescues in Alabama are aware of them and are also working to help them. There are no lab rescues here and I try to help every lab I can, and now I am just over my head alittle. The rescue that I was working with the day I got the labs is the one that wanted to put them down, I am NO LONGER working with them. So Sugar and Smokey are not in a rescue group, they are with me as my foster's.
I do appreciate all of Joe and Aleta's help as well as the many others working on this.
Thanks,
Sherry
HaleyJo03 04-18-2007, 12:56 PM Hey Sherry and welcome to the board. I think you'll find a lot of support here and some wonderful people.
Samantha 04-24-2007, 12:00 PM Updates anyone? How are they doing?
HaleyJo03 04-24-2007, 12:14 PM Well I wish there were better news but it's still a work in progress. Somethings have come up and not panned out as hoped. We'll just keep at it until we can find them a home but if you all could keep fingers crossed, say some prayers or just send good thoughts for these two it would be greatly appreciated.
Samantha 04-24-2007, 02:03 PM Awe darn! Well all fingers toes and paws crossed here!!
MellowYellow 04-24-2007, 02:27 PM Still hoping it works out for them!
