We are going to meet our new doggy (hopefully) tomorrow. He is about 2 years old and really needs to gain about 10 pounds.T

He is currently eating Natural Choice Chicken and Rice with Oatmeal. According to his foster he is doing ok on this food but he hasn't been on it for too long. Is this a good food? Should I leave him on it if he is doing well?

Why is it that ALL vet's seem to recommend Science Diet? The first ingredient in the adult food is corn. I thought corn was bad.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion about food. How do I make the right decision?

If he's doing good on the food I would leave him on it for now. Too many changes can be stressful, and with coming to a new household you don't want to stress him out with a new change in food. I think Vets always recommend it because that's what they carry, and aren't always educated on nutrition.

Are you talking about Nutro Natural Choice? That is a bit grain heavy.

Yes, that's the one. I had planned to leave him on it for at least a week. I know moving again will be stressful for him and I don't want to cause any additional upset that isn't necessary.

I'm thinking of either TOTW Pacific Stream or Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. Thoughts?

TOTW is a good food and grain free. Just make sure you transition your new dog slowly on the food to avoid loose stools.

Sticking to what is working is as close to a consensus as you will ever see on food. Vets are like everybody else when it comes to recommending what they sell. The difference is that they know most dogs don't have problems with corn and the other ingredients in Science.

As long as he is doing OK on the Natural Choice, he will eat enough of it to slowly gain weight, and you can afford it, I would stick to it.

I would stick with what he's eating for at least a month. It's not a terrible food and you need to know what's normal for him in health and behavior before making a major food change.

If the dog is doing okay on that food, I'd leave him on it for now. The stress to moving to a new foster home and changing food may be too much to ask of him right now. It's a decent food and should gain weight as you slowly increase his food.

I would stay with it too. Plus I'm not as anti-grain as a lot of folks. The majority of dogs do just fine on it. Some don't though.

If you do eventually switch food, ease him in to it by mixing in greater percentages over about a week and you should be fine.

good luck. our first adopted pet was very small. we used pedigree since that is what he was on at the pound. he beefed up very nice and we slowly transitioned him ...........
