Has anybody had any experince with Acana food ( the regular, not the grainfree variety) ?

I like the fact it is made here in Canada and by Champion foods which is well respected. I am thinking about this food as a switch....any experience or thoughts ?

I used the grain-free variety and i found it to be really good.
My dogs coats were very shiny and poop was firm.
They loved the Pacifica one.

I am just switching Diesel to the grain free type (Pacifica) he is doing very well on it so far. His coat is very shiny - and his bowels are less often and much smaller. He seems to be doing well on it - :)

Thanks folks.......but I am interested in the "non grain free" version.........or the one with grain if you will.

Not sure if it would be better, worse or the same quality as the grain free Acana.

sorry...I use the grain free Acana. Any reason why you are not interested in that? I was not too impressed with the ingredients in the regular Acana because of the steamed oats as the second ingredient because I just don't find that necessary in a dogs diet. My food has potato and I also don't find that necessary though ;)

I would try it and if your dogs do well on it then great :)

To be honest, I just haven't completely bought in to the grain free diet idea.........rightly or wrongly.
I tried my boy on Orijen a while back and it was a disaster.

It was a disaster for my two on Orijen as well, but EVO and Acana have been good. I fed raw for a while so the idea of going back to a food loaded with grains wasn't appealing to me when everything I have read has made it clear that grains are not necessary in a dogs diet. That being said, I also fed California Natural with no problems. Grain free has been nice for the dogs poop...only once a day, small/firm and odourless and no more ear infections so I will stay on grain free now.

I think there is a big difference in Acana grain free and Orijen. Orijen is just way too rich for some dogs. Acana grain free isn't nearly as rich as Orijen.

We did the puppy and junior (they have grain) and BIG hit. We then transitioned onto grained Adult which was also a big hit. Beautiful coat and firm, regular poops. You can set your watch by his poo schedule I'm pretty sure. In the months to come we'll transition onto Pacifica as I wasn't sure I wanted to go grain-free for under 1 year.

We're very happy with Acana.

I've looked at the ingredients and guaranteed analysis of the regular Acana and it seems pretty decent. You can't buy it where I live, but if I were using a food with grain and had access to it, I'd definitely try the regular Acana line. I actually like that they use oats instead of rice.

I am feeding the Acana Prairie Harvest (grain free) to my two dogs right now as part of their kibble rotation. It has really been the best for my dogs out of all the ones we use. I like other formulas, on paper, just as well; but the Prarie Harvest seems the best match.

Me either, but I did go with a formula that excludes corn. No ear infections either and she looks great. So I'm happy.

I am also not a grain free feeder. While it may be the answer to some, I feel a high quality food with some grains in it is just fine. I always think of my childhhod buddy Shooter (beagle) who lived a perfectly healthy life of over 16.5 years on whatever was on sale at the grocery store.......... mmmmmmmmmm Kibbles n' Bits!!!

That said, our girl Jolene will probably not be getting any Ol' Roy or Kibbles n' Bits.

Ok, back on topic. We are currently switching our girl from the breeder recommended Purina PP LBP to Acana Adult Dog. So far with excellent results. No issues what so ever. She loves it and so far, even though she is still getting the last of her puppy food, we are down to 3 poops a day from 4. I guess I lied, the only issue is brutally foul smelling gas and poops. We'll give her another couple weeks to see if it works itself out before we concider our options. Price is reasonable (imo) @ +/-$46.00 a bag.

I would stay with the Purina Proplan. The breeder obviously feeds it for a reason, and I would at least feed it until she is an adult. I switched Hudson and it put us on a food rollercoaster, so I regret that decision and should have stayed on the proplan.

Our vet recommended moving her off of a puppy food and onto an adult food. We were provided with a bunch of info about what we need to look for and a case study on young dog healthy skeletal/joint development. I also called the breeder to get her opinion. She was fine with this decision as long as the protien/fat/... % meet or exceed that of ProPlan. We'll be keeping a close eye on things.

Thanks for providing feedback based on experience!

As an addition to the gas....Brier had pretty wicked gas on the puppy stuff, not so much with the adult though.
His toots actually make a noise these days (he startles himself) but are kinda scent-free (miraculously!) They're usually AFTER he poos too. It's quite funny, he works in reverse.

I have been feeding Acana large breed puppy for about 3 months and over the last month she has had off and on soft stool, the vet said put her on Hills ID for a while to see if a bland food would make it better??? do you think I should try the Acana grain free?? or do you know of another bland food? she is 10 months and the vet said to put her on an adult food...
thanks

We had to go Hills ID for a while too due to an increased acid issue and some mega tummy troubles. Just did it for the recommended 2 weeks though. The acid issue arose when we were transitioning onto adult food, so after the Hills we went back onto the adult and it's been back to normal. We started the transition to adult at about 6 months, so I'd think you'd be good. The Acana Lamb & Rice is quite good for those with tummy troubles apparently. I had a good chat with the gal at the store last night and she said that's kinda the "point" of the lamb and rice is to help those along who have a little more trouble digesting. Only has one protein source (though a very good one) and is more mild. Maybe that'd be worth a try if you're interested in sticking to the Acana brand.
Good luck! Let us know how your little one is doing.
