View Full Version : Aggressive Towards Other Dogs

My wife and I have been looking for a yellow female labrador to adopt, preferably three years or older.

The lab we found is three years old. She was rescued from a backyard breeder where she mothered several litters of pups. She has been spayed, fully vaccined, heartworm tested (negative) and on prevention, and is even micro-chipped.

The rescue place says she is quiet in her crate, and does not seem to be bothered by much. They say she is crate trained and house trained. And loves kids.

However, there is one issue: they say she is not good with other dogs because of her treatment by the breeder. They say she was forced to come into contract with other adult females while she had litters of pups, and the other females were not always nice to her. They say she can be aggressive towards other dogs if a dog gets in her face.

Since everyone here knows more about labs, rescues and this breed, I wanted to run this by everyone.

My wife and I are both young, in our 20s. No kids yet but we are planning kids in the next 2 years or so. We would like a lab who has already matured somewhat and is trained and would also make a great family dog.

I just want to make sure this is not an issue. Sometimes we do travel and so we would take the dog to the best kennel in the area so she would have a private run but I'm wondering if there would always be the potential for her to attack another dog?

Thanks for any input.

i wonder what "aggressive" means in this case. i'd consult with a trainer and see, after you visit with the dog.you wouldnt want a dog that would attack others.

I'd want to see how she was aggressive- the extent of it before adopting.

I've had show litters and they were all raised in my home. My other show dogs were also in my home. I never had an aggression issue between adult dogs. The other dogs would "stop by" the whelping pen to look at Mom and pups but it never seemed to bother Mom. Yes, the Mom was more protective when the pups were young but never aggressive to any of the other dogs. The other dogs seemed to know not to get into the whelping pen or get in Moms face when she was in there. They'd do a quick look see and move on.

I am not trying to discourage you, I think it is wonderful you are looking to adopt. I'd probably see if I could get a behaviorist or trainer to evaluate the dog and give their opinion. Some things to ask are is she aggressive both on and off lead to other dogs or just on lead or just off lead? Aggressive towards all dogs or certain sized dogs or colors? (I had 1 dog I showed that hated black dogs, not sure why but he was fine with other dogs, just not black dogs)

Some dogs will be aggressive to other dogs on lead but are fine off lead. If you get her, I would start working with a behaviorist or trainer quickly so that she learns she can not be aggressive to other dogs. Also, many times dogs react to the person holding the leash, they feed off the emotion coming down that lead so, make sure when you are walking her, that you are relaxed and calm.
