Mio is currently 7 months old and eats 3 cups of Eukanuba Rice and Lamb for puppies twice a day. He is not chunky by all means but from reading others it seems I'm overfeeding. How much should I be feeding him?

View Full Version : Am I overfeeding? MVG 10-05-2006, 08:10 AM Mio is currently 7 months old and eats 3 cups of Eukanuba Rice and Lamb for puppies twice a day. He is not chunky by all means but from reading others it seems I'm overfeeding. How much should I be feeding him? Super_Cooper 10-05-2006, 08:21 AM What do the insructions on the bag say to feed a pup of his age and size? Pebb26 10-05-2006, 08:41 AM I did the same exact thing ( 6 cups a day). PJ wasnt overweight at all, but when I told my vet how much I was feeding him, he looked at me like I was a crazy woman. I cut him down to 5 cups..2 1/2 in am and 2 1/2 in pm. The bag of food says to feed them even less (3-3 3/4 a day) ,people have told me he got so thin. But I am sticking to the 5 cups. TG Lewis 10-05-2006, 08:44 AM The amount you feed should be based on appearance and activity of the pup. The side of the bag is merely a guideline. At 7 months I keep my pups lean, they are on about 5 cups of Euk LB puppy a day, split between 2 feedings and I can barely see the outline of thier last rib. If your pup looks fat, she probably is...If you think she looks too skinny, she probably is..... trust yourself, as you see your pup everyday CanyonLabradors 10-05-2006, 08:45 AM It depends on the food, like we only give our dogs 2 cups a day of Nutro. 1 in the AM and 1 in the PM. They do get treats though. Euk. might require a bit more food, but you would probably be safe dropping it a bit down. luvbugs 10-05-2006, 08:57 AM How do the poops look? Nice and firm? MVG 10-05-2006, 09:06 AM I can't remember what the bag says but I know it was less than what my vet recommended when he was 3 months old. She told me to up his feeding to 3 cups a day (1 1/2 - twice a day) while I was only feeding him 2 cups ( 1 - twice a day). Then I gradually increased it and he is now at 3 cups twice a day. He looks fine not at all chunky - I think he is rather small for his age. He is probably at about 50 pounds and you can see his waist and you can see his ribs a bit (you really need to look for them though) and you can feel him when you pet him. His stool is nice and firm - every once in awhile its gets a bit soft but still fairly firm. Timberlabs 10-06-2006, 07:30 AM Wow 6 cups a day? That seems like an awful lot of food. But...I think you have to take in consideration the brand of food and your dog. I think the better the food, the less of it you have to feed. I currently feed Natural Life Lamaderm and Ruger at just under 1 gets 2 1/2 cups a day on the days I feed kibble only. Lovemylabby 10-06-2006, 08:41 AM The amount of food you feed depends on what food you are feeding, how much exercise your dog is getting and how your dog looks. (as others have mentioned) If you feed a premium food, you can feed less, your dog will utilize more and there is less waste. We feed Eagle Pack Holistic and my Toby eats about three cups per day. He stays at a healthy weight. If I fed him 6 cups of this same food per day, he would be very overweight. Trust your judgement and take a good look at your dog. You will eventually know the correct amount to feed him. Dogs that get tons of exercise or working dogs will require more calories. 3dognite 10-06-2006, 09:12 AM The amount you feed should be based on appearance and activity of the pup. If your pup looks fat, she probably is...If you think she looks too skinny, she probably is..... trust yourself, as you see your pup everyday I agree. Labs are different sizes and have different needs, so reading the dog is an excellent idea. And let's keep in mind that growing puppies need more food than our adults. My big boy ate 6+ cups a day as a growing youngster - and trust me, you could see his last two ribs, so he wasn't overfed ;) Now, as an adult, he's doing great on 4 cups (+/-) a day of the same foods. |
