I am sorry if I have offended anyone with my post trying to find a home for my lab. This was not my intent at all. I stumbled across this fourm while trying to look for alternatives, and figured that the people here would be able to help.
My neighbors and the cities animal control have put me between a rock and a hard place here, and I do not know what to do. Yes I agree totally with you he and my son need better training and awareness on this.. Which is why I have the trianing class scheduled... I am not a trainer and was at a loss how to get him to mind better so.. sought help and still intend on taking him to the class. We have put top locks on all the doors so that my son can not just not think when he opens the door, and so that he has to come to us to get the doors open.. therefore creating the awarness he needs to learn.
However, given the choices that my county animal control has given me I do not want to risk his getting out one more time for that would mean certain death for him which is why I appealed here and in other area's.
If you have any suggestion on how to get the neighbors to love him or at least tolerate his presence I am eager to try... The last thing I really want to do is loose Shadow he is not just a dog to us.
Again, I am sorry if I have offended anyone it was not my intent.

You have not offended anyone. You might try posting for suggestions in the training section though. As far as your neighbors are concerned, it seems to me that the only thing you can do is always keep your dog onleash and away from the neighbors. there are many on this board that live in apartments and homes w/ out fenced in yards, and they all manage. It just takes a little bit of extra effort. :)
I wasn't offended...just trying hard to understand is all. Shadow just sounds like such a wonderful dog..it just seems that there's got to be a way around the idiot neighbors. If you have to keep him on a leash at all times outside around the house then that's what should be done. See if you can find a park or some place that you can take him to throw a ball and let him run.
Maybe even a dog daycare of some type??
It's good that you have signed up for training.

We have all the fixes in place and are actively working on this.. the neighbors we can work around and yes there is a beautiful park at the lake close by that we take him to quiet often. The one thing I can't seem to work around is animal control.
I would like to thank you for your comments and support.. I don't feel as alone in this today as I did the past few days. I have also been pillageing thru the training threads here and am going to start implementing some of the training ideas now and hopefully this will work and animal control will see that we are really actively trying to fix the problems.

We'll certainly try to help all we can. It is so hard for a lab or any dog to be rehomed. Stress is bad all the way around and now that we know you do love your baby and really want to keep him, we promise not to be so "hard" on you. Unfortunately, some people come here just to try to get "rid" of their dog and don't really care how, when or where.

I found several pages of Lab Rescues in GA. Here's a copy of the AOL Search page and there were more. Why don't you go to Google and check, too. Just in case you have to give him up??

Thank you the only one I could find that did not terminate was the Muscogee County Humane Society. The others in the area I checked into terminated some after only a few days and other would keep them until they got full then imediate termination for new arrivals.
If it comes down to it (and I hope it doesn't) I would be willing to drive any distance to give my guy a chance.

Good for you. Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does, we definitely want a Rescue or a no kill shelter.

I hope it doesn't come to you having to give up your dog. However, if you do, I've worked with Georgia Lab Rescue and they are fantastic. The lady who runs the rescue started it by herself and has run it by herself for 8 or 9 years.
All three of my dogs came from this rescue.
I worked with the rescue for 2 years before I had to leave, but I worked in the PR part of it and I know how difficult it is to be the only one returning calls and answering e-mails. So, if you need to contact them, be persistent with them. They are truly fantastic, but are sometimes overwhelmed. She can also direct you to other rescue groups in the area if her intakes are closed.
Just to let you know :)
