ST. CHARLES, Mo., May 11 /PRNewswire/ — Royal Canin USA is announcing
today the voluntary nationwide recall of eight Sensible Choice dry dog food
products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products.
This announcement is based on the company’s ongoing extensive review of
its manufacturing and quality assurance testing procedures, which
identified trace amounts of a melamine derivative from tainted Chinese rice
protein concentrate provided to the company by domestic ingredient supplier
Cereal Byproducts, headquartered in Illinois.
“We deeply regret the concern and anxiety this announcement today will
cause our loyal customers and the entire pet community,” Olivier Amice,
President and CEO of Royal Canin USA, said. “While a very limited number of
Sensible Choice and Kasco products in this recall tested positive for trace
levels of a melamine derivative, Royal Canin USA is voluntarily withdrawing
these products out of an abundance of caution and because we are fully
committed to the welfare of our customers’ pets.”
Royal Canin USA has no confirmed cases of melamine related illness in
pets eating Sensible Choice and Kasco products affected by this recall.
Last month, Royal Canin USA announced it will no longer use any Chinese
vegetable protein suppliers.
The following eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven
Kasco dry dog and cat food products with date codes between July 28, 2006
to April 30, 2007 are being voluntarily recalled:

Based on today’s announcement, pet owners should stop feeding their
pets the eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products, seven Kasco dry dog
and dry cat food products listed. Pet owners should consult with a
veterinarian if they are concerned about the health of their pet.
The safety and nutritional quality of Royal Canin USA pet food is our
company’s top priority because we understand that the health of pets comes
first. Pet owners who have questions about the voluntary recall of Sensible

Thanks for posting this, Agnes.
Royal Canin had some products recalled before. If you would like to see which of their products have not been recalled, here is a list.

I just edited this to add "Sensible Choice" to the thread title. Had a kind of false sense of calm for awhile, didn't we?

I wonder who else "Cereal Byproducts" supplies.

I posted this on the 8th:
http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/showthread.php?t=103503

At that time, there was still supposed to be one company out there who had received the contaminated product from Cereal ByProducts, but at this point, I don't freaking know if I am coming or going, and I know Royal Canin recalled something before, so I don't know if they are the missing company or if they were already counted from a previous recall. So confused....

Maybe I should create a timeline!

We've got a timeline. I've been copying Itchmo's excellent recall summary into it. I'll go update it now.

I really thought I was safe with my dog food Sensible Choice Natural Blend. I am going to a grain free kibble. Sooner or later no matter what you feed with grain in it, is most likely going to end up on the recall list. Grain free should = safe.
I'm going with Nature's Variety Instinct (grain free) which I can buy locally and on line. We'll see how they do on it. A bit more expensive and the bags are 5 lb. smaller but I really have no other choice at this point. Better safe than sorry. Chicken meal, tapioca and chicken fat are the main ingredients.

When this is all over with I would consider going back to my dog food as my girls do so well on it provided I know its safe of course.

I am just seeing this Patty ( I have not been on the board much lately) and I am so very sorry to hear....

Just wanted to send you good thoughts and prayers that your babies will be fine. The good news is that Sensible choice has not had any reports of illness...please keep us posted.
