Memphis Animal Shelter - Not a really great place! :(

Memphis Animal Shelter. I know that peopl have tried to get others out and have not been able. Does anybody know if its gotten any better?

I have not heard that it has gotten a bit better. UGH!

I have heard recently is has gotten much better. Very clean, smells better, adoptable dogs are kept passed their due date. My contact says the new Director really cares he is making slow progress and getting fought every step of the way by the County Officials...etc. Why I have no idea???

I sent Soybean a PM to see if he can get her out of the shelter tomorrow. I am going to call down there tomorrow to see if they are willing to hold her another couple days.

I know I just told Linda that I couldn't foster, but this one is so sad looking and she only has until tomorrow. I just want to do something. I do need to know some more history on her as we do have cats and a new baby coming.

She DOES look so sad Alex. My gosh, look at those eyes. I want to reach through the screen and clean her eye boogers off of her. :)

Alex MAS is in Memphis TN Dana - Soybean is in Ky I know when we were working on Rudy Nash Vegas we had a heck of a time finding someone to pull. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the group we worked with I know Nevin ended up pulling but I think he is kind of busy with his new house and his own dogs. If I can remember the girls name who eventually took him Ill post it - dang I hate when I cannot remember specifics.

Try contacting RAOT ( do a web search as I can't remember there website). They can temperment test, pull but I'm not about temp. fostering since they are usually full.

I think the group that pulled was RIOT. They will pull, send to the vet, that kind of stuff. Somebody on this board knows much more about it, but I forgot who...let me try to search...

They aren't my favorite rescue group due to past mistakes but they might be your best bet. Do not hesitate to contact them. MAS may be improving but if they are full, they do not hesitate to kill.

I don't know what to do because the website says she is due out tomorrow. I believe that means she will be put down tomorrow. Is this true?

Susan can you make a phone call to the shelter, I have a baby safety class in the morning so I won't be able to call when they open.

If they can hold her for a couple more days I think I should be able to do somethig.

If they agree to hold her I will talk to ROAT about getting her pulled. I will figure out how to get her here later.

I have never heard of MAS holding a dog. They just don't have the room for it. The due out date means that is the one and only day the animal is up for adoption. The next morning she will be PTS unless she is lucky enough to make it to the adoption area or if really lucky, to be held past her due out date. If you are serious about getting this pretty girl saved, do not hesitate to contact RAOT or another rescue in Memphis. I'm not sure what good it will do to call the shelter but at this point there is nothing to lose.

Okay, just got a hold of the answering service for the shelter (a live person). Gave him the cage number and description of this baby girl. He took my number and is going to page the shelter. I may be a call back tonight about her. I told him I would follow-up in the morning and please, please don't put her to sleep. Keeping fingers crossed.

MAS now has a list of dogs held past their due date. These are only the most adoptable dogs, hey don't have space for anything else. You need to complete a homeward bound application with RAOT before Jeanne will adopt the dog in your behalf, you also have to have solid transport arrangements. She won't just pull a dog out if she isn't confident you'll be able to get it to you. Good luck.

Sorry, computer was acting up because of the weather here this morning. I filled out the homeward bound application for the chocolate girl at MAS. Waiting to here back from them now.

Okay just got home. I hope this girl gets adopted by someone in TN first, if not I will pay the adoption and stuff like that. Worse case scenario I could potentially go get her myself if they were able to pull her.

Alex, I did put that in the app too that you might be able to pick her up. The shelter still has a message that its closed. I nervously waiting for someone from RAOT to get back to me on her. I've got to take Samantha to the vet at 2:30 p.m. for a recheck on her UTI and her kidneys. I'll be back as soon as I can.

Okay, I'm back. The homeward bound app says that normally you will be notified within 24 hours if they adopt an animal for you. It says you will NOT be contacted unless we have adopted a dog for you. So its only been about 6 hours now, 18 hours and counting. Keeping my fingers, toes and anything else crossed that I hear from them soon.

I'm hoping I'll get a call from them by 10 am tomorrow. That would be the 24 hour mark. Couldn't sleep very good last night. I saw that little girl's face every time I closed my eyes. I'm praying we were in time to save her.

Back in Dec 04 Jeanne pulled and fostered a y lab/husky pup that I applied to adopt on behalf of my brother and his family. I applied through RAOT's Homeward Bound program,(online). The pup (Miko) is now about 10 mths old and lives in North Vaoncouver BC Canada with my brother's family, and he is spoiled :)
It is possible that Jeanne may know of someone within the group that can foster the lab, if she herself or Donna are not able to do so.
Or there are boarding facilities that Jeanne would know about.
Be sure to write the ID # on all communication with Jeanne about the dog.
Memphis Animal Shelter gives first priority to locals for adopting their dogs, so Jeanne can only adopt the dog for you if a local has not come forward.

Email Jeanne Chancellor at mingostar@aol.com and Donna Malone at raotinc@aol.com with due out date and dog's ID # on subject of email.

Its is possible that she was adopted yesterday by a forever home. If we don't hear anything today I am sure we will hear something tomorrow.

I spoke with the shelter and there computers have been down since Saturday so they can't tell me if she was adopted or not.

Well per the shelter it looks as if the dog was PTS. She didn't have a name but I will call her Memphis and say a prayer tonight.

Her due date (adoption date was 7/16 but their computers were down for the weekend. I filled out the homeward bound app on her first thing Saturday morning. I guess we were too late. :cry2:

Can whomever changed the title of this thread remove the NO NAME part. I named her Memphis as I was trying to rescue her and that was what I would have called her. Seeing that I was the one that was going to foster her I feel that I have that right to see that she is remembered as MEMPHIS

Can someone change this thread to show that this dog's name was MEMPHIS!!! They were able to change the thread to show that she was put to sleep with no name. Please honor her with the name I would have given her as her foster father!!!!

Thanks Linda, and I am sorry for sounding harsh. Yes this was an awful one and we tried. MY wife and I weren't going to foster before the baby, but this one sounded so sad and was so beautiful. She was actually looking forward to her coming to the home.

When we do start to foster, we are going to look at the labs that may be a bit anywhere from 2 to 5 years in age. Too much older and Aowyn would drive them nuts.
I should post a picture of her soon. I need to get some newer pics of her first.
