View Full Version : Another question about dog food/Update

Me again :)

Dryf is doing well on the new food. My dad is happy and keeps saying that "he's spoiling Dryf". haha. he's too cute. He's also happy that it's not really that much more expensive due to the quantity of food fed.

He did ask me a question yesterday though. He is currently feeding Performatrin Ultra Chicken and Brown Rice. He wonders if it would be ok to switch (back and forth) from the Chicken&Brown Rice and the Lamb& Brown rice. A quick review shows that the only different ingredients are the Chichen (for Lamb) and the Chicken Meal (for Lamb Meal)

On another note; the neighbours dog had the runs and my dad suggested they feed him rice. LOL. How quickly they learn (last summer he thought I grew a second head when I suggested feeding rice). Of course, the neighbours chose to go right to the vet who charged them an arm and a leg on pills and a "special" food. Sounds like they went overboard. That's why my dad loves Dryf's vet (a different one) because she will always try and find "home remedies" or cheaper alternatives rather than drugs and expensive things ( when it's possible).

Tanya, congrats on getting your dad to switch food. It is fun to see them start talking about "good" food huh. Dryf is looking awesome!!!
As far as swapping betweend chicken and lamb I would say it would depend on if Dryf does well on the Chicken. Kinza has been on both Kirkland C&R and L&R. I think she does better on the L&R so we stick with it but she can eat the C&R if she needs to.
I am far from an expert so will defer to those that know much much more than I do on this subject. ;)

Sure. I switch from Premium Edge Chicken and Rice to Diamond Lamb and Rice every few months. Of course, my presumption is that he does equally well on both foods.

So switching back and forth from Lamb to Chicken (and back again) shouldn't cause an upset stomach UNLESS he has problems with Lamb?

I think that's a safe bet :) I have always switched my dogs among different foods, and this summer I am rotating on a DAILY basis, without any issues. I happen to think variety is a good thing.

I agree...I would love to do that with Calvin, but I'm always leary that he'll develop food allergies down the road. For Dryf, though, I'd say he's good to go. You may want to start with a small bag, though, just in case.

Well, abrupt changes do cause problems with Jes, so I phase in the change. If even he will tolerate the lamb, he still may have an upset stomach if you abruptly change it...it just depends on the dog. I think many adult dogs can be switched cold turkey.

Ok that is what I wanted to know. That means it's not really worth giving him variety because one SHOULD transition from one to the other.

My dad just wanted to feed him some variety. A few of you seem to agree that it can be done, others that it MIGHT lead to problems.

I think that at 12 years old he'll be ok with just the chicken!! Heck, even I enjoy eating corn on the cob EVERY NIGHT LOL ;)

But, I've been told that if it's the same brand of food, that it's usually OK. Can't say that I've ever tried it, though.
