View Full Version : Anyone feed Avoderm?
CanyonLabradors 04-24-2007, 09:06 AM I contacted them because I wanted to get the scoop on the debate that avocados are bad for your dog.
They sent me 2 $3.00 off coupons. If anyone feeds it or want to try it, PM me and I'll mail them to you.
ZenCat 04-24-2007, 09:21 AM I've never tried it, but I'm curious about the avocados too! What did they say about that?
My food (Nature's Logic) also has avocado on the ingredient list.
CanyonLabradors 04-24-2007, 10:11 AM I wish they had emailed me instead of writing me, so I could cut and paste it. Their response was interesting. It basically amounted to that the see the toxicity claims cycle through every so often. But they have not seen any specific data on what parts are claimed to be toxic and how much is supposed to be toxic.
They have been making this food for many years, and use the oil mostly in the food which has good health benefits.
I know a breeder in CA with an avocado tree, and she has to fight her 6 labs to get to the fruit before they eat it. She hasn't had a single lab die from avocados in her 20 years in that house!
It's kind of like Garlic being on the list, but so many foods use it in their recipes, and it's also supposed to ward off fleas etc....
ZenCat 04-24-2007, 10:20 AM That's the same analogy I made: Garlic. Great in small doses, potentially nasty in large.
Not unlike wine ;)
Interesting!
d2roberts 04-24-2007, 10:29 AM Neither of my boys have responded poorly to avocado - and you'd think if any dog would, it would be Calvin. ;-)
Riggs 04-24-2007, 12:08 PM I can't wait to hear about testimonials on this food. Just this weekend my friend was telling me about this food and its help with allergies in dogs. She is going to try it cuz her yellow lab has some extent of food allergies. Her SIL has been using it on her dog and says within a few days she wasn't chewing or licking her paws like she usually does and has had no ear infections breackouts as of late.

I've know a few of GSD people that have fed this food, and swear by it for allergy dogs. The avocado ingredient must be new though? I would not think that there would be that much avocado to make a extreme difference:) I use to feed pinnacle, also by breeders choice for a number of years. A good food, just a pain in the butt for me as I ordered it over the net..

ClaudiaMc 06-10-2007, 12:49 AM Jen,
Kirby eats Avoderm, his breeder recommended it. Said her dogs never had allergies while on it. He loves it, his coat looks good, he never scratches, always smells good. The breeder has since switched over to a raw food diet. I'm thankful I haven't seen the Avoderm on the recall list.
p.s. congrats on that cool new job!

It's kind of like Garlic being on the list, but so many foods use it in their recipes, and it's also supposed to ward off fleas etc....I know this is an old post, but since it's been recycled, I'll chime in. I wouldn't say it's like garlic. Garlic contains a substance poison to all dogs when given in large amounts (or over long periods of time, since the effects on the blood are cumulative). The fruit of the avocado is not thought to be poisonous, but some humans (possibly some animals) are allergic to it and may have serious reactions - similar to a peanut or shellfish allergy. The leaves, pits (if chewed), bark, branches and skin of the avocado all are potentially toxic in large amounts, so when preparing avocado dishes at home, make sure those skins and pits (also a threat for obstruction) aren't left where a dog can reach them.
We had an avocado tree when I was growing up - all the avocados would ripen simultaneously, so it was always a battle with the dogs to get to the fruit first! If they ate any skins, they always threw them back up - they must be really irritating to the gut. It was my job to clean it up. Yuck.
