This is from my great grandmother who was the Pastry Chef to Franz-Joseph (Emperor of Austria-Hungary) pre WWI

Apple Cake

Cake:
1C Sugar
½ c butter
2 eggs, beaten
2C flour
1 1/2t baking powder
1/2t vanilla
1/2C milk

Strussel:
¼ C sugar
¼ C flour
1/8 C butter
1T cinnamon
mix together

Put sugar & butter in bowl and beat till creamy. Add eggs and rest of ingredients. Beat
Divide into 2 – put in 2 round pans (I've tried it in one big pan and it doesn't taste the same - so use 2 round ones)

Peel apples & slice (about 6 apples)
Put apples arranged in circle on cake

Cover with strussel & sprinkle a little cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg on top to taste

Bake at 375 for 10 minutes
Turn down to 350 and bake for 15-20 minutes

I love this cake - I could eat a whole pan just by myself.

Okay, these are probably stupid questions but...does it matter what size round pans? I assume you put the batter in and then lay the apples on top - is that right or do you put the apples in and put the batter on top of them. Guess that's it - thanks!
