View Full Version : Apples and Bannas
Momma2Jack 10-03-2003, 04:15 PM Every night my boyfriend Colby loves to eat an apple. Jack was begging one night and Colby thought he wouldn't like it so we put a piece down and Jack ate it up and begged for more.
It went the same with bannas. Jack absolutely loves them.
So now we have to end up sharing our fruit with him.
Just thought I'd share.
canter 10-03-2003, 06:48 PM I gave Molly an apple last week and she kind of liked it, but not as much as I thought she would. It was out of the fridge, so I think she liked chewing on it while it was cold, but once it came to room temperature she lost interest. I'll have to try bananas!
brawnwyn 10-03-2003, 07:52 PM I can't get any of my guys to eat apples or bananas. Grapes, they love, but I don't give any more than a few of those. The only vegetable they eat a lot of is green beans.

Calley's Family 10-04-2003, 10:23 PM Calley loves all of the fruit we have given her. We started feeding her fruit from the beginning. She especially loves strawberries and raspberries and watermelon (maybe because those are my favorites and she likes to share with me- Jeannie).
Just remember, with apples don't let them eat the seeds because they have arsenic in them.
Momma2Jack 10-06-2003, 08:33 AM Thanks for the advice on the seeds of apples! I so didn't know they were bad (we haven't let him have them anyway).
That is scary. We will watch for seeds.
Thanks again.
albert 10-07-2003, 04:00 PM How high is the toxicity of the apple seeds ? Would crab-apple's seeds be toxic as well ?
We have a crab-apple tree in the backyard that wasn't supposed to have fruits but ended up producing tiny apples. I have caught Boyd eating the fallen apples a couple times, but by the time I catch him it is too late and he is already swallowing them ...
Should I relocate the tree ?
On a funny note, Boyd learned to pick the plums from the tree just like a giraffe.
By the way he searches for fruits outdoors you'd think we don't feed him ...

Calley's Family 10-07-2003, 10:55 PM Well, the apple seeds in small quantities are not highly toxic. We try not to let Calley have any just to be on the safe side. I don't know about Crabapples. I think if the crabapples are really little (smaller than a 50 cent piece) that they are from the ornamental crabapple tree not the edible fruit bearing (Dolgo Crabapple). I don't think that you need to relocate the tree though.
How cute that he loves plums! Maybe you can get a picture of him in giraffe mode and share it with us.
Billg 10-09-2003, 12:04 AM It was quite by accident that we found out that Chloe liked fruit. She stole a bannana from our 2 yr old niece, we couldn't stop laughing. We now share bananas with her. We haven't tried apples yet. Chloe likes grapes, which we let her have now and then. I have heard that grapes are poison to dogs, but lots of people tell me that they let their dogs eat grapes. Does anyone have more information on grapes?
Tommy 10-09-2003, 06:28 AM Do you give fruits besides their regular meals?
I've been warned so much about overweight that I only offer Tommy his dry food. His treats are the same kibble and I take them out from his meals.
I would love to give him something else...
Momma2Jack 10-10-2003, 01:03 PM Tommy:
Yeah at our house we give Jack peanut butter, apples, bannas, dog biscuits (healthy ones), Cheese (only when we first trained him now it is rare), etc.
Jack has a hard time putting on weight though. Before we even gave him side stuff like that he barely ate his dry dog food. When I switched to Nutro Natural he started eating more dry food (guess he didn't like the other kind), but we dont' have weight problems with him so we don't mind giving him extras every now and then.
I would think that fruits and veggies are good and healthy for dogs. I have heard that steamed veggies and a little bit of cooked meat can even be just as good/better than plain dog food. I'm not an expert and don't claim that the TV show, or wherever I've heard about this from, are either, but I definitely wouldn't be afraid to give Jack fruits and veggies (they are natural and from the earth- not processed).
Just remeber you can also cut down how much/often you give him treats and/or stop giving him the non-dog food treats.
Hope this helps.
Labradornut 10-17-2003, 11:01 AM My 2 guys love bananas and apples so much that I can't eat one in front of them without giving them at least half. Someone mentioned green beans.... well I tried giving Harley the regular cut green beans once and he wouldn't eat them, but he likes the french cut ones. Go figure!!!
Hitch 10-21-2003, 08:17 AM Our pup loves carrots - but her hineness only likes carrot chips! LOL. She also loves apples and grapes. She is a big fan of cherry toms - but only if she gets to pick them off the vine.
Summer was here and she wasn't eating well - we couldn't figure it out. One day I ran in the house for a water and when I returned she was lounging on my chair eating a few tomat that she paw picked!
We only give Healthy biscuits, apples, hardly any peanutbutter, carrot chips and edible nylabones.
Hitch 10-21-2003, 08:18 AM Actually she used to love cheerios. We used them for training it was great. Now that she had some of the other goodies - it's no more for the cheerios.

Sounds exactly like my house. My boy, Jack, will drool sooo bad if you don't share. Then again, he'd eat anything, but we stick to the apples, bananas, carrots, cheese, green beans, broccoli, peppers...on and on.
Henneberry 10-26-2003, 09:12 AM Just remember there was a thread just a while back, by tobyteeth, warning us about grapes.
http://lab-retriever.net/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5700&highlight=grapes
Not sure if it is true or not...but I would definetly read the thread if you haven't already.
Averysmom 10-28-2003, 01:11 PM It is true about grapes and raisins, they're not good for them.
My Avery likes apples but that's it for the fruit! Sammy won't eat any fruit and Ceilidh loves all kinds of fruit and vegetables.
I had a beagle, George, that had a salad every night for supper. If he so much as looked at dog food he put on weight so he didn't get that much of it so we gave him a salad to fill him up. He loved it!
Florentin 11-24-2003, 11:00 AM Two weeks ago I also discovered that Hunter loves fruits and veggies.
He stole a POTATO from the pantry, and ate half of it. I got scared, because DOGS AIN'T SUPPOSED TO EAT POTATOES, so I gave him an apple. It was gone in less than two minutes. :)
jackyscott 11-25-2003, 11:25 AM Both Zeus and Georgia LOVE fruit and veggies. Zeus will pretty much eat anything but we stick to baby carrots, bananas, apples, orange slices, strawberries, watermelon, broccolie, cauliflower (but only 1 or 2 pieces - I don't need doggy gas! LOL)
Georgia is a little pickier - she will only eat the above if it's cut into small pieces and she not too keen on bananas or the carrots.
We usually just give them 1 or 2 small pieces.
Oh and they like the french style green beans too!
And they both know how to eat corn on the cob. After I am done with it I hold the cob and tell them "front teeth" and they both bite away at it - I think they like licking the leftover butter off. It gets pretty messy though so we try to do it outside.
MARSH_HUNTR 11-30-2003, 12:13 AM Flint LOVES pears I have to slice it into small pieces or he wont eat it
CDuncan 12-28-2003, 12:14 PM If you look at the BARF diet, fruits and veggies are definitely okay for dogs. There are lists of food and plants that are bad for them, too.
We're mixing with plain food, so Java gets any combination of spinach, sprouts, carrots, bananas, apples, kale, mustard greens, and green beans. She also gets a little canned fish or hamburger with dinner, usually. I've given her pork and venison, too, but made sure it was well-cooked. I read somewhere that it was bad to mix fruit and meat -- caused gas or something -- so she usually gets fruit at breakfast, meat with dinner and veggies at both meals. She didn't like the banana at first because I cut it into chunks, but loves it if I mash it up with a fork. I had a partial bag of baby carrots get questionable and tossed them on top of the compost pile... one fell out and Java squeezed herself in the 6" between the pile and fence to get it!
My only advice is to only give one new thing at a time (as in for a couple of days)m to make sure there are no adverse reactions. Doggie diarrhea is so not fun. :p:
