View Full Version : Approaching crisis in New Martinsville WV
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 05:15 AM I've worked with Rosy, the shelter director, in the past. Two nights ago we got 3 dogs into rescue...they had hours to spare/they were scheduled to be PTS the next morning..... She was informed by the dog warden that he dropped off 7 dogs after she left last night AND has 39 on his list to bring in.
Here are 3 of the labs that are with her right now
From Rosy on Yellow Lab and Bessie both approx 1 yr old:
Yellow lab is a GREAT gentle dog. Has been kept inside before. Walks great and listens to everything you tell her to do. Wonderful. I also can't say enough about Bessie. She is a beautiful square headed lab, but is NOT hyper and is very submissive and loves everyone and everything. Not a large dog. Small for a lab

I can take any of one (Bessie would be my first choice chubby girl) them but not until I get back from vacation. May be too late by then :nothing:
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 05:23 AM I had to throw him on here...how cute is Jasper?

Also John and Wayne are still listed but they are 2 of the 3 that we got into rescue so they are safe. I'll update when she lets me know if any more labs are brought in.
Shantis Mom 06-01-2005, 05:59 AM OK that Jasper is one of the cutest little things I have seen in a while - what is he supposed to be mixed with? What a doll!
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 06:35 AM She has him listed as bassett/beagle but I see some weenie dog in there.
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 07:41 AM Is there anyone willing to short term foster in the area?? I'm getting a bad feeling. I can have Bessie and/or Yellow lab pulled and spayed but I can't pick them up until I get back from the beach on the 20th. I'll be tore up if they are put down, when I had room......but took a vacation.
Lovemylabby 06-01-2005, 11:00 AM I know I am not in the area...can any of them be sponsored?
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 11:20 AM I don't think so she doesn't have space to hold them :(
I'm really working to get a temp foster for Yellow until I get back. Another rescuer is working on Bessie..if she can pull her, Bessie will need held for transport so the most we can do without fosters is board?? This makes me so sad.
Susan 06-01-2005, 12:37 PM I am confused whether the first pic is of a dog at the shelter or if it belongs to the poster; it sure looks like a golden to me. I'm too far west to be of personal assistance. I can help with a donation if needed!
Susan
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 01:02 PM Susan...not my dog and I agree she does look like a golden..in other pics she looks like a golden/lab mix..look at her here:

The shelter director e-mailed me about her a few weeks ago, I've been keeping my eye on her I can't believe she hasn't been adopted. Now the shelter is full.
Susan 06-01-2005, 02:07 PM Deneen, I wasn't paying close enough attention, or I would have realized this girl was not yours. In the pic above, I would say 100% golden and lab. I can't believe she hasn't been adopted. At least in Wichita, the last time I saw a "for free" ad for lab/golden puppies, they were all adopted the first day the ad ran. I don't mean that is good; rather I mean people apparently were drawn to the combination of two well-loved breeds. That made me curious, so I played with Google and discovered that there is a growing seller's market for the golden/lab mix puppies/dogs; just like labradoodles have grown in popularity. It's disgusting, disturbing, and idiotic. Oh, I believe one of the good rescue groups in Wichita, had a golden/black lab adult come to them; he was in foster only briefly before getting a great home. I saw his pic; he was too stocky to look like a flat coated retriever. Instead, he looked like a golden with black hair. Bottom line, why isn't someone jumping on the chance to have this girl? Susan
Hallesmom 06-01-2005, 02:20 PM Deneen and I are trying to find someone who can pull and hold Bessie and Yellow girl - I can take Bessie in ASAP in Rochester. I would love to get her spayed down there as the cost is so much less for the rescue to take on. Either way we need to find someone to hold them for transport. Yellow Girl would need to be held til Deneen is back from vacation.
Can anyone in the area pull/hold them? I know it is a lot to ask - even if you can only do one. I normally pull in Kentucky so I have no contacts in WV :(
Shantis Mom 06-01-2005, 02:22 PM I wish I lived closer to you guys - I would love to do short term foster! :(
labsnewfy 06-01-2005, 02:33 PM We are in Mineral Wells Wv - New Martinsville is about 1:40 minutes from me. I talked to my SO and we can foster one of the girls. If you need us just let me know.
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 02:35 PM I am shocked the yellow mix has gotten to this point. When Rosy sent me her picture I thought..."surely I won't have to pull her" and never gave it a second thought. Well...here I am scrambling now.
LOL Sherry was the "other contact"...I wasn't sure she wanted "outed" .
I may have a short term foster....maybe 2.
YAY labsnwfy I'll e-mail you when I get home. One will be until transport is ready to Rochester (shouldn't take long) the other would be until I get back from vacation on the 20th.
Gotta get to Penny now on the transport.... I hope we can work this out for these girls.
Deneen
Hallesmom 06-01-2005, 02:46 PM Oh, I am getting so excited! Bessie is coming up to Rochester, NY but I am really hoping to get her spayed by the shelter vet, or a vet there before coming up. I am thinking regardless we probably can't get a transport by this weekend, so she would need a foster til next weekend to come up here. Deneen is in charge of this all :)
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 03:19 PM Two bits of slightly good news!!
Jasper's (the little mix) owners called they are coming to get him. The mom and pups are going to rescue and a few others are leaving this weekend.
Sherry and I can take Bessie and Yellow lab (Rosy got an application on yellow lab but she said nothign concrete)...SO I told her we'd take both or at least Bessie...
Bad news is she has the weekend to clear the rest of the place out for 39 new dogs..the warden is starting his rounds on Monday. :(
I'll update this evening I have to run to Connor's baseball game.
Susan 06-01-2005, 03:34 PM This sounds so encouraging! If some more interim help is needed than can be found, I will donate to a temporary boarding. I know that boarding is not what anyone wants, but if that would buy needed time, I'll contribute. I do not check this board at home, so there can be a slight delay in reaching me. Deneen, I will PM you some contact info for me. I hope that's okay. Susan
Hallesmom 06-01-2005, 05:45 PM Deneen - if Yellow Girl gets adopted, that is great! I am so glad Jasper is going home - I hope it is a good one. I am still up for Bessie - being a black girl and all, she probably won't find anyone to adopt her in 2 more days at the shelter :(
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 07:09 PM I know poor Bessie..black is always last....I told her whatever happens that we had spot for Bessie so she is safe and if the adoption falls through we had a spot for Yellow too. I know Rosy is swamped I'm waiting to hear from her. I can't imagine how she feels today.
autumnsmom 06-01-2005, 07:26 PM Things are moving right along here...turns out Bessie's owners showed up today...out of the blue...I'm not going to comment further.
Yellow lab is adoption pending so we may not have to take in any... (and I quit too close to vacation for a crisis LOL) THANK YOU everyone for supporting and offering to help..trust me I will need you all. With 39 dogs on the way in I'd bet my life there will be labs in that figure.
Hallesmom 06-01-2005, 07:35 PM I hope Bessies family does right by her this time :(
Lovemylabby 06-02-2005, 06:57 AM Gosh...me too...did they surrender her and then go back to get her? How awful...I don't know if I could trust them again....
autumnsmom 06-02-2005, 07:42 AM Bessie was a stray... Rosy was working for home yesterday on rescue/internet stuff. She got a call AFTERWARD that the "owner" picked up Bessie and threw her in the back of a truck. Rosy is livid...the staff should have never let him take her. Rosy is going to call today to see if she can get him to surrender Bessie. Sherry would have found such a good home for her.
Shantis Mom 06-02-2005, 07:48 AM I hope she can get her back! What a terrible thing to have happen! :(
