Anyone up for a meeting sometime in the next couple of months? Maybe a picnic or a BBQ? We could meet someplace centrally loctaed or we would be up for hosting a BBQ at our place. We have 2-1/2 acres fenced for dogs at our house. PM us if you are interested.

How many hours is that from here??? I WANT TO COME!! ;)

Calley's Family
04-03-2004, 10:12 AM
According to Mapquest it is 13 hours, 2 minutes by time and 817 miles from Vegas to our house. Mapquest routes it through Denver, which is weird, but I think it is about 12 hours or so going through Durango and Phoenix - could be wrong. Either way it is one really long day or two easy ones. And it goes without saying that we would love to have you!

ChikadeeLab

Yes Miss Lisa! Come on out!! ^__^

Through Denver? Ok, that's kinda odd. Maybe because its a more recognized place to people who don't live here?

Always wanted to see the midwest states...but taking dogs across the border probably entails huge amounts of paper work.

And Oh..this deters me a bit. Sudbury, ON to Falcon, CO

Total Est. Time: 31 hours, 15 minutes

Total Est. Distance: 1750.39 miles

The longest I ever drove in one shot is 18 hours. LOL and I never even left the province. We got lots of space here in Canada.

Calley's Family
04-04-2004, 04:50 PM
I feel a few cliches coming on:
A journey of 1750.39 miles begins with the first step. :drive
No guts, no glory.

Anyway you and anyone else on the board are welcome.
We are just beginning to put it together, but we have already confirmed one HUGE suprise. :brow:

Again, for anyone interested, just PM us or post here. More details will follow . . .

The tenative date for the Colorado Lab Chat Board BBQ at our place is Saturday June 26, 2004. Time will be determined later - but it will kinda be an all day thing. :D

Miss Lisa, I have driven from Denver to Vegas a thousand times - it is about 12 hours, depending on how fast you drive. I've done it in 11 before but thats my best time.

The last weekend in June is the anniversary of the weekend we got Isabelle from the puppy rescue - how awesome!!

You are 1,271 miles away...19.5 hours. I wish I could come...you guys sound like you're going to have a blast! I just don't think it will work with a 12 week old puppy. Maybe next year!

Wow - Neonshark is going! Someone deserves a trophy for the furthest distance traveled! Hope you guys take lots of pictures!

It is gonna be GREAT! We are planning some lab-centric and people-centric stuff and will include plenty of just hanging out time. Details to follow!!
Our property is quite dog safe and has been tested by Calley, Sebastian and many of the neighbor dogs on play days. Got one little enhancement to do at the gate to block a very determined dog from getting in our out, but that will be done and checked long before the day.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far - we are so looking forward to it and it sure makes it easier to plan this far out. Still got room for plenty more!

HuntersMom with Trakker
labracadabra with Jack & Bower
Laurniko with Arthur
LessLethargic with Dahlia & Isabelle
Mixedupdog with Earnest

I may leave Dahlia at home & just bring Isabelle - it depends on how she acts at the dog park around then. she is almost always really good but she does get dominant dog issues & also plays rough sometimes.

then again if i leave her at home she will howl all day. i may stick her with my boyfriend at the park for the day and caravan to the springs with lauren.

Laurniko
04-27-2004, 02:11 PM
The boyfriend is from the springs, so I will try to convince him to come too.

Is there any good camping around you? I know I've camped up by the Springs and Rainbow Falls, as well as up by Divide, and I'm sure you guys know some spots.

We will be fresh from our road trip out to California with Arthur, so hopefully his camping manners will be honed by then.

Leave the boyfriend at home.. it could be a GIRLS road trip!! LOL.. So.. the date is June 26th? I would probably have to take Thurs and Fri off to make it worth the ride.. Well - I;m pretty sure that YES WE ARE COMING!!!!!! Yipee!!!!! It's gonna be a LONG drive for us because we are not stopping (other than stretch and potty breaks) and straight through it's 17 hours - so add 2 dogs with stops and I'm thinking around 20? yikes

We will probably leave on Thursday eve, drive through the night and arrive sometime Friday to totally collapse, but we will be ready on Saturday. Then we will start back on Sunday. Wish we had more vacation because I absolutely LOVE Colorado. Hey - what happens if I find a job and a house in the mountains while I'm there - hee hee.

I think I will get some good ol' German sausage and cheese to bring.

miss lisa - thats so great that you are coming! there is this huge stretch from utah to here without much in it. i guess it depends on how you are coming up but if you are doing it through utah then getting on I-70 your best bet for overnight is grand junction. its close to the colorado border (in colorado) and about 3-4 hours from denver - but I'm not sure how far from the springs (C.S. is an hour from denver)

He is all for it. I just have to make sure Moose is good to go after having his surgery.
And I have these 2 teenagers to deal with. DH wants to plan the trip with camper, 2 dogs and 2 teenagers. Don't know how that will go over....
We haven't decided for sure yet, but it looks like we will try to make it.
I have never camped with my dogs, and that will be an adventure in itself. But I would give it a shot.
We'll be working on it. I really want to meet all of you all.

I'm so excited you guys might be coming!!!! It will be so fun for all the dogs to meet up...I'm really excited to meet Harley too as I feel he is similar to my Jack in many ways.

JAcky: I will be in Brew City from June 17-20!! I'm attending a conference at the Hilton on Wisconsin Avenue. I'm so excited to visit my old haunts...UWM, the Lake, Lake Park, etc...so I'll be fresh from Milwaukee at the dog jamboree.

Oh, I meant to mention to Miss Lisa...if you come into Colorado on I-70 and want to stop around the Grand Junction area, Glenwood Springs is pretty cool. There's a huge hot springs pool there that can be fun, and the town itself has a historic feel. Grand Junction feels more like anytown, USA to me personally.

We're going out to Aspen this coming weekend for a few days, and that's not far from Glenwood Springs either. Aspen is gorgeous too...just let me know if you want more info and I'd be happy to make recommendations for a unique Colorado experience!!

It's a small world sometimes isn't it. Just be careful at the lake/beach - there were some problems there a few weeks ago - I think it was just a one time incident, but you can't be too careful. If you miss you're labs you can always come over & visit ours (we're by Miller Park - which USED to be County Stadium)

I am REALLY going to be missing my guys because I'm spending the previous week (11th through 17th) in La Crosse, for my little brother's wedding. So I have to go a whole 10 days without seeing them. Makes me sad just thinking about it!

Alright guys.. I really need to start mapping out the way there. I need any suggestions of the quickest way to get to where the BBQ is going to be from Las Vegas. So from ANYbody who has driven it, or knows a good way to get there, I need suggestions, so I can get this mapped out and more thoroughly planned.. its coming up so soon! I can't wait!! :D

Hey guys.. when are we going to start making the potluck list.. ? So we can figure out who's bringing what... so we don't get 10 dishes of coleslaw and nothing else :p:

I don’t really care what I bring, just as long as that Laughing Lab beer is there! I just looked yesterday and didn’t realize it was brewed in Colorado Springs! I’ll bring some…if just for fun, though I really like it.
Here’s the website: http://www.bristolbrewing.com/beer/beer_lab.html

Here are some things I could bring:
Grilled Pineapple – strange but yum…have to cook there on the grill, but it takes only 5 minutes or so.

Marinated cucumber salad

And then some fruit for the morning..OK?

MISS LISA
06-02-2004, 11:47 AM
MMMM... Well, I could bring pretty much whatever.. we can bring anything that travels well- We can bring chips/dips, snack type stuff, cause I gotta 13 hour drive ahead of me.. Just let me know what I should bring! :)

We will post a list tonight or tomorrow night with what we have. Work right now is a freakin' nightmare and the days are way too long. Keep posting what you think you might bring - it all sounds great so far! For you long distance folks, we have a grocery store real close to us and really, just you making the long trip is an awesome contribution. This is going to be so much fun!!!

MISS LISA

OMG - I can't believe it's coming up so fast. I am just getting over bronchitis - so I haven't been on the board much - been out of work a few days.

We will be bringing some Wisconsin cheese and sausage.

J&J - LOL at your Calley pillow comment in the latest memo!!! Hmmm- seems like she and Zeus have the same affliction.

Gosh, Jacky -- hope you're feeling better soon!! Have you been to Brennan's on Bluemound Rd.? They have some of the best selection of cheese and sausage I've ever seen! Their cheddar with blue cheese is to-die-for! Not cheap, but mmmmmmmmmm....

I'm so jealous of all of you making it to this wonderful gathering!! I can't wait to see pics of you all together!! :D

Yeah Barb - then we'd have another driver......
PS - I have been to Brennen's - but plan to get stuff at Usinger's - yum......

LOL - for the photo contest submission.

Don't I wish I could go along. We'd have to rent a bus for us humans and dogs. I'd only bring Daisy, since Liesl is so impatient on a long ride. Unfortunately, we have a family reunion that weekend in central WI.

J & J -- as far as getting a pic of all the dogs playing and submitting it for the photo contest, if everyone wins, how would you decide on the theme for next month? You'd all have to agree on one. Let's see -- if the picture got voted the winner, ideas have to be submitted to Calley's Family, then see if there are two or more similar ideas, and all attendees would have to vote on the two or three most popular. Geez, my head is spinning. ;) You guys talk it over and let me know, LOL! :D

Heheheh! Couple of thoughts: Yep, let's see if we can get the pic. Then, we'll see if it is submission-worthy (check and see if the lighting is right  ). Then, we'll see how we do in the contest. IF we win, we will have the winner of the trivia contest we are having at the BBQ pick next month's theme. If this gang can coordinate this multi-state event, coming up with a plan on how to pick a theme ought to be easy!

Jacky - If you use CompactFlash (CF) cards in your camera, we have a CF drive and a CD burner so you won't have to buy another card.

What's compact flash cards? I have two digital cameras, I wonder if either take that kind.. That would be SO conveinent!

Calley's Family
06-03-2004, 06:22 PM
CF cards are about an inch on each side - almost square and about an 1/8th of an inch thick. They come in different memory sizes. We got ours at Sam's Club, but here is a link with some pictures of them: click here (http://www.memorysuppliers.com/compactflash.html) Or, if your camera comes with a USB connection on it, bring it and we can burn a disc from your camera.

Could be a warm one, but know that we are at 6975 ft. above sea level and usually cooler than Denver or Colorado Springs. Looks like it is 92 right now. Here is a link to a weather monitoring station located about 4 miles from our house: Weather at Calley's Family' s house (http://koaa.weatherbug.com/stationOb.asp?id=PEYTN)

I'm at 94 degrees and counting....It's funny because in Maine I hated the cold, and here I hate the heat. I've now learned that I like the cold with sunshine, which you really don't get in Maine. Fall and winters in Colorado are perfect.

MISS LISA
06-07-2004, 02:32 PM

Okay.. I was just wondering.. we will still be outside well into the night right? Sitting by the fire and stuff? If so, I am going to be bringing 3 different colored glow sticks for my girls to wear around their color- so that way I can spot them. Especially Kali.. how is everyone going to keep track of their dogs? The only reason I am wondering, is because if anyone else has glow in the dark collars for their pups - I wanted to make sure mine were different colors.. unless everyone else is SUPER lucky, and their dogs don't like to be adventerous and "wander" off :D

This weekend, at the lake.. Pebbles had Red, Kali had Green and Heidi had Yellow

Calley's Family
06-08-2004, 03:50 PM
The collars are a cool idea! I didn't even know they had such things.
Just a programming note - this area that we will be in is fully fenced, and we have had dogs (ours and other people's) test it many times, day and night. So, unless your dog is a digger, everything should be copacetic (like, totally, fer sure!).
I think the collars are a great idea, but wanna make sure that everyone knows that the place is safe for wandering around leash-free, even at night.

Sorry this is a bit late in coming out and I know I promised it 2 nights ago, but my dog ate my homework. Yeah, that's it! Blame the dog! Poor Calley :( , she has nothing to do with my procrastination! Anywhich, this has been put together from posts, PM's, IM's and emails copied over the last few months. If I have missed anyone or anything, I am really sorry, please send a correction! We obviously haven't heard from everyone and with good reason - nobody knew what was on the dern list! So here is version 1. Please let us know of any additions, deletions or changes and we will post updates as we move forward.

The Official Colorado Lab Fest 2004 Pot Luck List (thus far – 6/9/2004)

(So far Lisa's worry of too much cole slaw or too many chocolate cakes appears to be okay) ;)

Calley’s Family – Grilling burgers (beef and vegan), brats & our famous Lemon Chicken. Buns, pickles, condiments, etc. Pop, beer, iced tea, lemonade, etc. & B&B ’Ritas. Pancakes and bacon with juice, coffee, etc. for Sunday morning.

d2roberts – Grilled pineapple, Marinated cucumber salad, Laughing Lab beer. Fruit to go with the Sunday morning brunch.

Jackyscott - Wisconsin cheese and sausage, some sort of dessert type item and some snacks (chips, etc).

Laurniko – food & goodies, BYOB.

Lesslethargic – Picnic Potatoes, BYOB.

MISS LISA - chips/dips, snack type stuff.

Neonshrk - fresh smoked salmon, reindeer sausage, etc.

What else can we use? Got any camping chairs or coolers with ice? Please bring 'em if you have room in your vehicle. Extra chairs are always good. We have a 'beer fridge' in the garage and 2 coolers, but could use a couple more. Also, if any of you have a video camera, please bring it. Ours is ancient and we may try to use it, but it is a bit iffy and we would love to have a copy video of this event!

Thanks everybody - YOU make this event and its going to be great! About 16 days to go . . .

MISS LISA
06-09-2004, 06:51 PM
Yeay!! Sounds great! Does anyone have any favorites of chips? Otherwise, I'll probably just bring the basic, tortilla chips/salsa, doritos, fritos and cheetos.. Let me know!! This is going to be a blast! Way to go J&J!

Lol, wow, I don't believe I've posted in this thread for awhile.

Nicki and I are open to bringing anything. If I'm not too chicken, I'll ask Mark tomorrow if he'd like to bring Ashley and come with us. ^__^ Hmmm, yes, so anyway.

I have a video camera that is fairly new, but I just haven't used it very much so I'll bring that. It uses 8mm tapes, but those are easy to record: hook the camera up to the tv and put a VHS tape in the VCR and play the camera tape and record from the tv. ^_^

I think we also have a big cooler somewhere around here that I can fill up with ice and lug over there in my truck ^_^

Lemme know if I can do anything else! ^_^ I'm also bringing something for each of the dogs if we get anymore in at work between now and then. Hmmm, since I'm assistant manager now, I can get those ordered in..... ^_~

I just was making up my "packing list" so I don't forget anything (I have never traveled with my dogs before) and besides the obvious of water, bowls, bags & pooper scooper - a friend suggested some beach towels to soak in water since Colorado is way up there above sea level it's going to get pretty warm, especially in a car, even with the air on. So I just wanted to pass that on to others - that some towels to soak in water and drap over the dogs to help keep them cool.

MISS LISA
06-11-2004, 12:36 PM
I was just doing the same thing.. I wonder if I should too, since my girls are used to the heat... Hmm... Yeah, it can be kind of freaky for people like you and I that aren't use to that stuff. Tuesday, at work, there were 3 behind us - they never touched down - but boy did we run to our stairwell. (No basement, of course.)

Tornadoes that may touch down here are not like you see on TV - from what I've seen they're tiny. I have heard my share of stories, though...

We're leaving Thursday night about 8:30 - that's about when the dogs start to settle down for the night.

We're getting home from work - I'm going to nap while Scott tires out Zeus and then I get the first shift for driving - I figure till about 2am, then we'll switch.

So - for everyone driving - drive SAFE!!!

Sounds like perfect timing. Jacky is right about the weather, too. The long term forecast calls for warmer, drier weather towards the end of next week. See? All of your mind energy is working already. :D

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that there's a decent chance we won't be coming to the lab fest after all. I just came back from a 10 day trip yesterday and Bower was neutered today. He did well with the surgery but he is uncomfortable now. I talked to the vet about his activity and the vet doesn't even want him taking any walks for 7-10 days. I did not realize that the recovery period would be quite that long. I won't get into the gory details but apparently too much activity can cause a condition in males that is quite excruciating for them, especially at Bower's age.

Sooo....there's a chance I will come on my own with Jack (and not spend the night), and there's a chance Bower will make a miraculous recovery. In any case, I will keep you posted.

I can't go. I had some stuff come up. I need to get our cabin property ready for some family for the july 4th weekend. I'm jealous. It sure sounds like everyone is going to have a good time. I can't believe how far people are traveling for the Lab fest. That is awesome. Dogs rule!!

Have fun everyone. Maybe we can come next time.

We are disappointed that you won't be making it, Mike. We will keep you posted for next time.

We certainly understand, Heather. To say we are bummed is putting it mildly! :( Get better soon, Bower-boy!!! If you can come for awhile with Jack, that would be awesome! Maybe this will entice you:

Here is a pic I shot off of the deck tonight. We have had some crazy weather over the last few days and today was no exception. Longest day of the year and our high was 56, but it stayed in the low 40's for most of the day. Anywhich, Pikes Peak got a fresh dusting of snow and it looked spectacular at sunset!

Wow, that is just gorgeous. It was very cold where we are yesterday too. I took Jack for a walk last night around 8pm and my hands were frozen by the time we got home. Our sunset was certainly nothing like that!

I am seriously considering coming with Jack for awhile. He would absolutely love it. The timing with Bower's neutering wasn't so great but we've had so many short weekend trips that we just haven't had a chunk of time to do this. I wanted him to be able to go swimming and enjoy his summer and he hasn't been able to do that as his mind has been elsewhere at the lake recently.

I'll let you know as the week progresses.

Yepper - they have been practicing all week. Hopefully the race won't mess any of you up traffic-wise.

In other news, I couldn't resist . . . made a sign for out front by the gate. Turned out pretty cool. Check it out on your way in. :)

Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know how things are going.

Bower is making a great recovery, but I do not think he is up to acting like a bucking bronco all day on Saturday, which is pretty much what he would do around that many dogs! :)

On the other hand, my husband is open to the idea of me and Jack taking a road trip down there. I just can't stand you guys up after all the work you've done to organize this, and I've gotta pick up that t-shirt too! Jack is going to be sooooo excited. He's hardly gotten any walks this week so he might even do a butt tuck, we'll see!

Save travels to everyone!!!

Hey guys,

I have a small propane grill that I was thinking about bringing as well...could you use an extra?

hm. what else. cant think of anything but we should be there around 3:30 on saturday.

whoohoo!

Oh - Miss Lisa: my stop at Lake Mead took a turn for the worse!

After driving in 115 degree weather from denver all day we were totally crazy, took a wrong turn at overton, went to the wrong side of the lake, couldn't find a place to camp, camped on a ledge, where there was mud that sucked you down to your knees, so we couldn't find a place to swim.

It was horrible!

Im so bummed, because I know there are cool places to camp on that lake, but i didn't realize it was so big! I'll tell you ALL about it this weekend.

It hasn't had time to dry.. but it is BAAAD.. and it STINKS.. bleccch... You can tell me the story this weekend.. I'm sure I can relate.. :) LOL..

It is gorgeous right now - temps in the 70's and a bit breezy. Might have some rain Friday and Saturday, but should be okay. We have plenty of extra jackets and if worse comes to worse, blizzard gear. We know how you desert folk are with temps below 80. ;) Friday night? We'll play it by ear depending on how everyone is feeling, but we will order pizza and just hang out and take it from there. Sound good?

I tried being sly about it, and sneaking them in the bag of dog food I was packing.. but NOOOOOO.. nosy Kali had to be right up in my business... and now Kali and Pebbles are doing butt tucking circles over and over (Already moved the rug all out of whack.. and moved the coffee table.. ) And ALL THREE OF them are pacing back and forth between the garage door and the front door (The two exits to the truck) - They KNOW somethings happening.. Let's see-- party dress, bathing suits, books, walkmen, OOPS---
wrong list, that's the go to Florida on Wednesday list.

Here we go, tent, sleeping bags, cooler, tent pegs, tent pegs, WHERE ARE THE TENT PEGS? It's raining- oh well, clean the junk out of the car and load up in the morning. Just pile it up in the kitchen for now. EARNEST DON'T EAT THAT IT'S FOR TOMORROW. Why did I do three loads of laundry and still have nothing to wear? Earnest, move. Levi, move. EVERYBODY JUST GO TO BED--I DON'T NEED YOUR "HELP". You don't need that, it's only overnight. Well, maybe we'll get stuck, bring it anyway. Is the flashlight charged? Is the camera charged? Is the phone charged?
IF I survive this evening we'll be there bright and early? Tomorrow morning. I'm sooo excited!

Ha! We got home around 3ish - Calvin went potty then took himself to bed, upstairs...didn't care that he was missing dinner, didn't go potty again, and this morning I had to wake him up to eat breakfast.. With all the backpacking/hiking we do, I have never seen him so tired.

On a good note - for those wondering - all is well on the lower end - a little pepto given at the right time works wonders.

Thanks again to all, especially our hosts...we had such a wonderful time.
