What do you guys think of this dog food? It seems pretty good to me. Thinking of switching Marina to it when she gets a little older.

Thinking of switching Marina to it when she gets a little older. Opinions? Pam and Brandy 11-03-2007, 08:58 AM Can you post the ingredient list? Amanda77 11-03-2007, 09:09 AM Top Ten Ingredients: Chicken Whole Ground Wheat Whole Ground Barley Chicken Meal Canola Oil Carrots Salmon Meal Dried Egg Product Spinach Tomatoes Pam and Brandy 11-03-2007, 09:14 AM Top Ten Ingredients: Chicken Whole Ground Wheat Whole Ground Barley Chicken Meal Canola Oil Carrots Salmon Meal Dried Egg Product Spinach Tomatoes I'm sure people with more experience will chime in soon but my first thought is that it's high in grains. Although chicken is listed first, I would suspect the primary ingredient is wheat. kodiesmom 11-03-2007, 09:16 AM I thought I read somewhere (sorry I don't recall where) but I thought "baked" made the food very rich, I guess wouldn't be an issue when she's older. My quest is trying to find one source of protein & 1 carb. Good luck! CaraBella 11-03-2007, 09:35 AM Although chicken is first, wheat & barley are second & third, so as a whole, the primary ingredient is grain. If it were me, I would love for something different Amanda:) Amanda77 11-03-2007, 09:38 AM It got a score of 116 on that list that was posted on how to grade your dog food. And, I should also add, I can't afford the most expensive dog food. So, would this one not be a good alternative? Amanda77 11-03-2007, 09:49 AM Oops, past the time limit to edit my post. As mentioned above, I can't afford the most expensive on the market. I believe the Authority Harvest Baked is about 30 bucks for a 35 pound bag. Do any of you know another (better?) food that is near that price range?? Pam and Brandy 11-03-2007, 10:17 AM Chicken Whole Ground Wheat Whole Ground Barley Chicken Meal Canola Oil Carrots Salmon Meal Dried Egg Product Spinach Tomatoes I'm changing my mind a little (now that I've had some coffee!). It wouldn't be my first choice because of the wheat, however, Chicken and chicken meal are in the top 4 - that's good. The wheat and barley are whole grains which, if you're going to feed grains, are the better grains as opposed to wheat gluten, etc. Adding the salmon meal adds another protein which isn't great but isn't as bad (in my mind) as mixing lamb, chicken and beef. So, I guess I'm saying it isn't a GREAT food but it's not that bad either. Since you have time, I would try to investigate what foods are available to you and really read the labels. Try to find a food that you can afford, is easily available and that has the best ingredients for Marina. I would look for something with one protein source, no soy and if grains are involved, ensure they are whole grains. Just my opinion, of course. Amanda77 11-03-2007, 10:26 AM Thanks! I will continue to research. I do still have some time. When is it best to switch them to adult food anyway? I think someone said before 6 months? Pam and Brandy 11-03-2007, 10:29 AM I'm not sure when the best time is but I switched both Brandy and Griz at about 6-7 months. CaraBella 11-03-2007, 10:45 AM Amanda -I didn't mean to imply that it was an awful food. I just try to avoid wheat, corn, and soy if possible. If the wheat were not included, I would like it better, but at least it is whole wheat. I think that is what I was paying for the Eagle Pack Holistic. It has been a while so I really don't remember, but thinking it was about $35 for the big bag. I think you can switch as young as 4 months, but we didn't switch until Cara was 9 months, and Bella was 5 months. CanyonLabradors 11-03-2007, 06:11 PM I've seen worse foods. On a whole if you dog does not have any sensitivities, the grains aren't bad. Wheat isn't totally terrible. But you do have more grains than meat in the bag most likely. Chicken (vs. chicken meal) is like real chicken....now imagine cooking it and it loses all it's moisture when it's cooked down. Once it loses that water content, the grains actually will outweigh the chicken and even with the chicken meal in the 4th spot, you are probably still giving more grain to meat. Unfortunately, the less the food costs, the MORE grain is in it. That's just the nature of the beast. Adding grains keeps the cost reasonable. Amanda77 11-03-2007, 06:52 PM Thanks guys. I will probably keep Marina on her puppy food for a few more months. I'm still leaning towards this food though. It seems like a good food that isn't going to break the bank, and, it's sold in a store that I have easy access to. If she has issues with the grains that are in it, then I guess I will have to go from there and try a different route. Lovemylabby 11-03-2007, 07:05 PM Amanda...please shop around before you make a decision. Authority brand food would not be my first choice...I don't care for the wheat and barley...many dogs do not do well on these grains. Although, I have seen worst foods, I do think you can do better with the price range you have in mind. Remember, that premium food really is a better value because you feed less of it. You don't want to see ingredients like corn, wheat, barley, and by products. You can switch your Lab puppy to adult food between 5-6 months old. You also want to reduce his feedings to twice a day, instead of three times a day. You just take the total amount you are feeding daily and divide it into 2 meals. Some of my favorite brands are: Eagle Pack Holistic California Natural Innova Solid Gold Lovemylabby 11-03-2007, 07:10 PM What also troubles me about this food is that I can not find a website for Authority? Is this food especially made for Petsmart? Where is it made? Lovemylabby 11-03-2007, 07:11 PM Oops, past the time limit to edit my post. As mentioned above, I can't afford the most expensive on the market. I believe the Authority Harvest Baked is about 30 bucks for a 35 pound bag. Do any of you know another (better?) food that is near that price range?? I pay very close to that for Eagle Pack Holistic which is a MUCH HEALTHIER food! (about $36.00) for the large bag. Amanda77 11-03-2007, 08:57 PM Yeah, I believe it's a Petsmart food. I pay very close to that for Eagle Pack Holistic which is a MUCH HEALTHIER food! (about $36.00) for the large bag. Really? Hmm. Well, I will have to find out if I can buy it locally. Cos shipping costs on a 30lb bag of dog food surely wouldn't be cheap. Pam and Brandy 11-03-2007, 09:02 PM For what it's worth, I had a lot of luck with Eagle Pack Holistic. I used the fish blend and Brandy did very well on it. The thing to remember is that each dog is different so what worked for Brandy may not work for Marina. Good luck finding a food for your sweet little girl. Amanda77 11-03-2007, 09:11 PM Yeah, every dog is different. You are right. The Eagles Pack website had a tool to search for local places that sell their product and a few came up. One of them being very near my home. But, when I go to that store's website, on their list of products they carry, Eagles Pack isn't listed. So, I will give them a call Monday to see if they do carry it and how much it costs. Thanks for the info everyone! Tyson'sMommy 11-05-2007, 12:56 PM I used this food for a while with my dogs and they did great on it. Its not the "best" food (but of course the best food is a relative term, each person has their own best) but it is pretty good I think compared to other foods. Tyson'sMommy 11-05-2007, 12:57 PM Also for eagle pack, check your local feedstores. Lots of them carry it and that way you woulnt have to pay for shipping if you decide you want to try these foods. CanyonLabradors 11-05-2007, 01:21 PM If you have a Costco near you, their Kirkland Chicken and Rice is $17.99 for a 40# bag and better than the Authority kibble. |
