View Full Version : Bacon and Eggs Treats

This is a great little recipe for treats. Very easy to do. We cut the dough with an old Rx bottle making quarter-sized treats. They don't spread at all when you bake them. You can also use a bone-shaped cookie cutter for larger biscuits. These are better than Beggin' Strips:throwup: , which are quite the chemistry experiment, and the dogs like 'em better. We stole this from The Original Gourmet Doggie Treat Cook Book by Carol Laybourn and modified it a little. It is posted without permission from the author. Our modifications in red.

Bacon and Eggs Treats

2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 1/2 cups Cornmeal
1/2 cup Cooked bacon (4-5 strips) turkey bacon
1 cup Cooked scrambled eggs (3-4 eggs) cook in micro
1/4 cup Vegetable oil or applesauce
1 cup Water
1/2 tsp Salt

Preheat Oven to 350º
Combine flour, cornmeal and salt in a large bowl and mix well.
Add cooked bacon, cooked eggs, oil or applesauce, and water to make dough.
Roll dough out onto a lightly floured surface - 1/2 inch thick.
Cut biscuits with cutter of choice - Rx bottle.
Put biscuits on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 20 min for quarter sized treats or 1 inch bones, 30-35 min for larger shapes.
Put on newspaper to cool.
When cool, store in airtight container and refrigerate.

This is one I'm going to make. Funny thing is... a human could enjoy these too! Probably cheaper then buying them treats at the store.

About how many does it make?

They are not bad at all; we tried 'em ourselves! Think the recipe makes about 5 dozen(?) of the quarter-sized treats, which are perfect for training as you can bust 'em in 1/4ths. It fills up a container that is about 8"x4"x4". Hope that helps! Let us know what you think.

Our 9 week old puppy LOVES these treats. I break them down to nearly nothing when I am training him and he nearly sniffs my hand off for the very last crumb. I have stuffed his Kong with a these treats too and he goes to town on his toy.
Excellent recipe!
Thanks for sharing.

I made these for Molly this weekend, and she loves them! I don't know why, but I was surprised that they turn out more like corn muffins than doggie biscuits. In fact, they looked so good after I took them out of the oven that I tried one. My husband got all grossed out, but I said, "Hey, I just used ingredients that I use in our food all the time -- they're good!" :) It was pretty funny. They really did taste good, like really dense, savory corn muffins. Yummy! I like their consistency, because you can break them apart easily into several pieces and have each treat last longer.

Thanks for the recipe -- I'd love to see more on this board!! :)

Sonny and Cher are sad....because they seen the recipe and I can't make it for them.

You see, I am not a baker..I am a Lover. LOL

I cook faboulous gourme entrees..but could never get past the baking, except for the bread machine.

Oh, but you could make these very easily. Just follow the recipe. Sonny and Cher can supervise.
I made them this afternoon for Harley and Moose and they agree that you can do it too.
I had a bone shaped cookie cutter, but I also made some heart shaped and used a RX bottle and made the quarter size ones.
A BIG HIT
Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Printed out the recipe to try. One question - I was reading in the Diet & Nutrition section that corn meal isn't that good for dogs? Is this corn meal different that what's in dog food? Also - even though I am a baker - where do I find the corn meal (I've never used corn meal in anything I have baked) - is it by the flour & sugar? I assume it is a dry ingredient?
Thanks

Corn meal should be available in the bake aisle of your local supermarket, usually on the top shelf by the flour, like you said. Some dogs are allergic to corn products, so you kind of need to test and see. Calley and Sebastian are fine with corn, although there is none in their kibble formula (Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul). I think corn meal is corn meal. Let us know!

Hopefully by this weekend I should have some made!!! As far as I know my dogs don't have any food allergies - they are both on the See Food diet (see food and eat it) ha ha!

I made a bath of these this weekend for Ruffy, and he LOVES them!

They were very easy to make. I didn't have an Rx bottle, so I used the little canister 35mm film comes in. They worked just fine & made little quarter-sized treats.

Thanks, Calley's Family, for making me very popular with my Lab!

This sounds great. They should be a tremendous hit if dogs like them better than Beggin' Strips. I'm going to make some and take them with me when I go to visit the dog I'm hoping to adopt in a few weeks.
