View Full Version : Beautiful Senior Black Female

:( She is breaking my heart :(

She was picked up as a stray on 1/28 so she will not be available until Wednesday. She is older which leaves her chances of getting adopted slim to none. I can't understand why more people do not want a senior in their home. They are so easy, so loveable, so precious.

When I walked up to her kennel, she was leaning her head against it to get a good behind the ear scratch. I took her out and brought her up front and loved on her for an hour.

Before leaving I put a blanket in her kennel to get her off of the concrete :( I hated leaving her there.

Susan, when you see this...think of a name for her ;)

She had a bowl full of Science Diet untouched - She chowed down on the milk bones

You can tell she has been bred numerous times :( Her belly just hangs there

A wise looking girl

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg218/kbbreaux/020208106.jpg

She is stiff and sore. I'm sure shelter life is not helping.

This is her IN my lap.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg218/kbbreaux/020208115.jpg

She has an injury that needs to be cleaned and treated

Through it all, she still wags her tail

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg218/kbbreaux/020208119.jpg

And the look that is haunting me right now :(

Oh my word. What an incredibly sweet girl. I love her. She looks so kind, so patient, so easy to love. Old soul eyes. She hasn't given up on people even if it turns out her people gave up on her.

A name? I'm not good at names, but she needs a special one. Special girl, special name.

She's breaking my heart. And you know what? It would trouble her to break anyone's heart. She just wants to please, be loved, be no bother.

Where is this senior located?? She reminds me alot of my Brooke that I rescued from Stark in OH. Being a senior, Brooke is the easiest of my five. Seniors are no trouble at all.
Can we name this girl Precious Paige?
How is she with other dogs/cats? Estimated age/weight?

Aww, she's beautiful. She reminds me of an old gal I saw at the shelter here several months ago named Rosetta. She was melting right into the kennel door to get loved on. I nearly went home with that dog, and when I called back after the weekend, I found out she had been adopted. (Thank goodness, or I would've gotten myself into some trouble with DH!) That is one haunting face, Kim. Seniors are absolutely wonderful, as you said. People often tell me that they don't want seniors because they will have to go through the heartbreak of losing them too soon. But the life of a dog, in the grand scheme of things, is so short compared to humans. If it's 5 years or 15 years, it's still going to hurt when they pass. We're still going to outlive our beloved friends. That dog right there may love harder in her next 5 years than anyone could ever imagine. For someone with small children, this is a slow-moving dog who won't run over the kids. She may not be perfect for the family who wants to climb mountains with their dog, but she's going to be perfect for an average family.

OK, I'll say it then. She sure looks like an Abbey to me.

Can I crosspost her on my website Kim?

I will also offer to sponsor her transport to ANYWHERE in the USA for a person who would adopt her. Are they treating her wound Kim?

Any way of checking her heartworm status? I think she's gorgeous and I do love the seniors but I'd hate to take on another heartworm case financially.

Hello,
I might be interested but I live in SC. I am going to be in NOLA in April. I know that's a long way away. I adopted a senior chocolate male about a year and a half ago and I don't know if I could every go back to puppies or younger dogs. He is the best thing and the love of my life. I have been contemplating adding an older female to our little family.
I am new to this board so hello everyone! I need to post a picture of my Beau.

amurphy08......welcome! there is a generous offer from Joe Maringo (they don't come any better than Joe!) who will sponsor this senior girl's transport ANYWHERE to a loving adoptive home. Please don't let distance discourage you. Just say the word and the folks on this board will get the ball rolling!

Kim, Joe, Jill,

I like the names you are coming up with. She does remind me of an Abbey. I like Rosie, but not Rosetta. Rosie fits her, I think. She also has an endearing look that my Sam gives, which made me think of Sam for her too, but short for Samantha.

Rosie

Samantha Sam Sammy

Maggie

M.E. (not "me" M. E., for Mary Elizabeth; a Catholic saintly name fits her too)

Kateri maybe Kate for short (Kateri was the first Native American woman to be confirmed "blessed" by the Catholic church. Kateri was Mohawk; her mother died of smallpox; Kateri was adopted and converted to Catholicism in her teens).

Rose, who was born Isabela. She was canonized in the late 1600s. She was known to be incredibly beautiful but she feared her beauty would cause people to focus on her instead of the faith she professed. (There are other things that are basically self mutilation or martydom, depending what you believe). Rose fits though. This girl is beautiful, but that doesn't matter to her. Pleasing us and getting a few ear rubs do!

Kim, you have now have a couple of great dogs on the need a home list. The yellow girl that was a Moxie-wannabe with Dani, but I think a rescue is taking her?? Ed/Labradane/Buster/Gabe - the galoof. And this girl.

If you need help from SO and me, let us know and let us know which most needs our help in what way. We'll wait and see how some of the different possibilities balance out. One thought would be keeping Rose safe with us until Joe could take her, but I'm not eager for her to make a bunch of transitions.

Good thoughts!!

That is very nice of you and we are of course glad amurphy08 is interested. You should be aware, however, that when it comes to Joe, Kim, or me "just saying the word" will NOT "get the ball rolling." Any dog who would be adopted from Joe, Kim, or me if I become a foster to any of them, does not go somewhere just because someone expressed an interest. People have to apply. References have to be checked. Vet references have to be checked. Home visits must be completed. The person applying has to establish a plan for picking up the dog. While transports might be arranged, if a person expects a dog to delivered to him or her from half way across the country, we tend to view the person as not being sufficiently committed to the dog's best interests. While a transport might in fact come into being, someone interested in adopting a dog should never assume a transport will be arranged and should demonstrate enough interest in the dog to create a plan for getting the dog.

I thought I should explain a little so that amurphy08 was not misled by your generosity. My guess is that he or she would not be, but because amurphy08's post is the first one he or she has ever posted, the person might not realize that you are just very excited about the possibility of this girl finding a wonderful home and not actually speaking for Kim or Joe.

When I look into her eyes I see Constance. I showed my DD and she said the same thing, even before I said the name. She is a beauty. All these seniors are killing me. I would love to get them all, but I need to fence in the back lot first.

Whew!! amurphy08 will probably think twice before speaking again! May I add amurphy, however, Soops spoke the truth also. Yes, there are precautions that are taken to make sure that any of these dogs are hurt or abandoned for a second time but the people on the Board will do everything in their power to try to help you as you go over the hurdles. If you want her badly enough, you will manage to get her. Just ask whatever questions you have and voice any concerns - someone will be able to answer you truthfully - most of the people here have gone this route at least once and know the ropes. Chin up!!!

My post was directed at soops and now at you. My post was not directed at amurphy. If amurphy is a truly good home, he or she will APPRECIATE that we take care to be sure dogs are placed in good loving homes that will keep the dog forever, loved and safe. Rescue work does harm not good, when all it takes to get a dog is to say "I want him." That's how dogs end up in bad homes, or with hoarders, or with people who aren't making a lifetime commitment. Indeed, we had one person on this board who had a lot of people fooled. This person was acquiring dogs through this board and other forums and then selling them or some the person just let die. Thankfully some of us have standards and did our homework; the person no longer uses this board to get dogs.

Am I saying amurphy is like that? Heck no. I am saying we take steps to be sure the right decisions are made for both the dog and the person.

I think Susan just offered some clarification, and I don't think that amurphy08 will be put off by it if he/she is serious about the dog. It's good to get it out there that there will be some bases to cover if the new member wishes to go forward with this, and we don't want anyone to be surprised by it.
(BTW Pearlsmom, I love the name Constance, too!)

I understand what you are saying but I don't see the need to come into this with both barrels aimed. What you have to say, be it to Soops or Amurphy or me, can be said in a pleasant way. Just because there was one bad apple is no reason to assume the rest of us fit that category and I believe that thankfully most of us have standards.

Obviously you are adamant about rescue and that is admirable. All I'm suggesting is that you tone your comments down a bit so as not to insult others.

Susan

Thank you Susan, Joe and Jill. Joe, please list her on your site and I'll cross my fingers the added exposure helps her :)

We are losing our shelter vet next week. I do not know if she will have time to test her or not. Her remaining days are booked with spay/neuters that left under contract. Those have to be done first since the adoption fees were paid. We are looking and interviewing vets, but have not found one yet. We have one that will work for us three days a month :( Hopefully we figure this out soon.

My vet discounts my rescues, so I am not too worried about that part. It is the shelter animals that are going to be in trouble. If she is HW+, I don't know if she can even go through treatment. If she is not spayed, I don't know that she can make it through the surgery. If that is the case, she will not be put up for adoption. She will live out her days in a foster home that I trust 100%.

So, basically until Wednesday - I just do not know.

Best case is Jen taking Gabe/Buster and me taking Rosie for now. Yellow girl and Ladybug (did not post her) are supposed to go to L4R so I am not too worried about them. Yellow girl is very adoptable - Ladybug needs work.

Any foster or forever home will go through an adoption process, vet checks, reference checks and home checks. When I pull a dog from the shelter, I am personally making a lifetime commitment to that dog. I am promising that dog that I will put him in a safe, loving home for life. Any dog that I pull will be returned to ME if the adoption does not work out. I will not allow any dog that I pull to be returned to a shelter - for any reason. If Susan, Joe, Jill or I sound harsh about what we are looking for - we are. I know what my expectations are and I am not going to lower them. If someone has a problem with they way I do my adoptions, then they can look elsewhere. I am very picky about what dogs I pull and I will not place them in a home that I am not 100% sure of.

amurphy08 - I am not trying to discourage you, I only want you to be aware of the process you will have to go through. I have done a couple long distance adoptions here on the board and will continue to do so if everything checks out. If you are interested in Rosie, send me a pm and we can discuss :)

I'd like clarify what I meant when I said "get the ball rolling." I have five dogs and four are rescues. I obviously know there is a process and you don't just send a dog off to someone that you haven't checked out. Jeez...give me a little credit.
I only want what is best for all the homeless Labs posted here and those that are not posted here but find themselves homeless.
I thought amurphy08 was a good lead to follow seeing as she mentioned already having adopted a senior. That's all.

Ok everyone....
wow, what a hello. I am fully aware of what goes into adoptions and I wouldn't want it any other way. These dogs need to go to good homes and everyone involved should be careful when placing them. I am interested to see how she checks out after Wed. so there may be nothing to discuss if the powers that be don't feel like she can be adopted.
I didn't join this board to find another family member, I actually joined to get health and nutrion insight. I started reading about rescues and just saw her picture and my heart melted.
I am hoping she finds a great home wether that's with me or someone else.

I am so excited you are interested in this sweet girl. I thought if you wanted her you would be relieved to know that we do no hand out dogs like sacks of flour, which was kind of how others were making it sound. It is a red flag when rescues do no screening at all and it sounds like you know that!

I love seniors and I especially love this girl! I can also tell you, Amy, that no one picks out labs the way Kim does. There are some pretty incredible dogs on this board because of Kim. :)

Thank you Amy,

Sacks of flour?????
Forgive me all for encouraging amurphy08 upon her initial posting. Evidently some of you are experts at this and it appears do not need nor appreciate any comments from the rest of us. (well at least not from me)
Although, I do not see where I guaranteed this dog to amurphy08 or did anything wrong. I am well aware there is a "process". As I mentioned earlier I have 5 Labs, four that are rescues.

Senior girl...I hope you find a forever home where you are loved.
