This is a great forum! Thanks for suggesting it, Lakelover and thank you Woody for implimenting it so quickly!!!

I look forward to inspirational stories, but in the meantime...

How does one get started?
I know there is TDI and Delta which certifies the dogs. What's the difference?

Scooby, my sweet 6 yr old, I think cld be a candidate but do you think he'd be too old to be taught to become one??

Eriko,
I think the average age in Lola's class was 6-7. She was by far the youngest one there at 14 months old.

I think once Lola gets her TDI certificate, I'm going to try to get her certified with Delta. It seems like most of the hospitals around us use Delta dogs. I think Delta is much more stringent than TDI but I'm not sure.

If you want, I'll be at the therapy class tomorrow night with Lola. Kathryn said she might go back with Nittany also. You can just come watch the class to see what kinds of things we have to do.

Give me a call if you want the details for tomorrow PM.

I know Delta covers you for insurance, does TDI? So, for example, if Calvin should inadvertantly hurt someone, like have his paw hurt the thin skin of an older person - we are covered for up to $1,000,000. This gives me great relief, and was the real push for getting us certified.

I'm going to bring Nittany back. It seems as though she might fair well when compared to this group's competition!! ;) For labs, it often takes 5-6 years for them to grow up and mature. Lola is the exception as far as labs go. Bring Scooby down. It will be a nice break for him.

I'm not sure if TDI provides insurance or not. I'll check tomorrow night. That was DH's biggest concern when I was trying to get Lola into see my BIL. He kept saying, "What if she knock's someone over or accidentally pulls out a tube? We could lose everything!"

I better ask tomorrow night. Thanks for the reminder!

Yeah - talk about a tail being used as a deadly weapon. Truth be told - Calvin's tail once knocked a tube out of an oxygen tank. Luckily this was a woman in a nursing home, that wasn't totally relying on the tank, and I was quickly able to get a nurse to put it back in. (Actually the nurse just told me to do it - but I'm not allowed to, per Delta.)

This is a person I visit regularly - and I'd never seen her with the oxygen tank. And, while we were visiting, she took it off her nose - so luckily it was literally not a big deal - but a lesson learned!

This woman gets Calvin very, very excited. She knows when we visit, which is right after dinner on Wednesday's, and she always saves a piece of her meat (from her supper) to give to Calvin, because she knows he can't have grains. Sometimes she'll save a piece of vegetable too.
