View Full Version : bil-jac
barkleydog1 10-18-2006, 01:07 PM We have a picky eater and have been told that Bil-Jac is the best for guys like Harley. We got a bag and he loves it. I have read that it is pretty good ingredient wise what do ya'll think any experiences? We started with Innova but had runny nose snort ect. as well as runny poo then tried wolf pup he hated that, tried Iams as that is what the breeder said to use but he got a bad rash. So far this seems to be working for the last two weeks.

Faith's mommy 10-18-2006, 03:02 PM i wouldn't use it.
here is some more info for you from dogfoodanalysis:
Pros: Second ingredient is a named meat product.
Cons: Uses by-products, low quality grains and other controversial fillers.
Uses chemical preservative believed to be carcinogenic.
The first ingredient is by-products. Whilst we appreciate that the manufacturer states this comes from organ meat only, it is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. We recommend avoiding any pet food using such ingredients. Chicken by-product meal is also used. That is a lot of by-products. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-products is “consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”
The second ingredient in this food is a named meat source. However, it is chicken inclusive of water content (about 80%) and once that is removed there is probably substantially less “chicken” in the food. The same applies to chicken liver (6th ingredient).
The main grain in the food is corn. Corn is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems.
Beet pulp is another controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
Cane molasses adds unnecessary sugar to the food, and is likely to contribute to yeast infections in dogs prone to those. We appreciate the use of eggs in the food.
BHA is a chemical preservative believed to be carcinogenic.
Matsuro 10-18-2006, 03:04 PM Look at my post called 'Care Alot Pets-Pet Supplies' you will find some good name brands on that site.
I would try Solid Gold, Canidae, Merrick, or Chicken Soup if Bil-Jac doesn't work out. I heard that Bil-Jac was okay to feed, as long as the dog has no problems. Its actually a LOT better than store brands like Euk., Iams, Pedigree, etc. I think Pro Plan has a new formula that has Turkey&Barley?? in it as the main two, since some can't stomach corn, soy, or wheat.
I also wanted to try Premium Edge at one time. http://www.carealotpets.com/item-detail/?ItemID=99950B&vLink=2&#bigpicture
I like the looks of the ingredients used. This is the Chicken and Rice formula, they have a Lamb and Rice if that is the flavor he likes or the flavor you are feeding.
You could also add Yogurt, meat patties that are mixed in the kibble. Applesauce no sugar added and organic if you can. Even cottage cheese is good to add, you can also ad a boiled egg.
CanyonLabradors 10-18-2006, 03:44 PM If Bil-jac works for you, then you should use it. But be aware that some of the ingredients aren't all that great.
Lovemylabby 10-18-2006, 03:51 PM Your Lab is beautiful! :)
I also want you to know that Bil-Jac uses BHA as a preservative...:( which is a toxin.
I, personally, am not fond of this food...there are much healthier dog foods available for your dog.
K-9MAN 10-18-2006, 03:55 PM I used some of it once...got a free bag. The friggin' corn in it made a couple of mine itchy. My malinois boy wouldn't even eat it.
3dognite 10-18-2006, 04:05 PM It really depends on how your dog does on this food. I have to say, the only Labrador I know who is fed this food is ten years old and has NEVER once been ill in her life. Never a loose stool, never an off day. But, I suspect this also has a lot to do with genetics :)
barkleydog1 10-18-2006, 04:44 PM Thanks for the input. I kinda thought that but he does like it.We will go back to the innova, he is old enough for the adult mix now, and try that. Would it be less rich than the puppy formula and maybe better poos?

Innova is an excellent food...but can be too rich for some dogs. Innova is very ingredient heavy. I tried it for Toby and it was a bit too rich for him...
I would try the Innova Large Breed Adult formula...this formula has the least amount of calories and perhaps is not as rich as the regular adult formula.
We have excellent results with Eagle Pack Holistic. They make several formulas: a chicken, a lamb , a fish and a duck formula. Here is their website in case you want to check it out. www.eaglepack.com
Good Luck to you and please let us know how you make out.
barkleydog1 10-19-2006, 06:34 AM Seems the Eaglepack foods get many endorsments on this board. I will get some today and give it a go.

If you want to try Eagle Pack...stay with the Holistic formulas...they do not contain corn, wheat or by-products. If you go to their website, you can print out a coupon good for $2.00 off a bag. Good Luck!
