can a 7 week old puppy with a small head grow into a big blocky head dog.or will they stay on the smaller size.

It's all about genetics. If your puppy comes from a line with the type of head you want, then likely your pup will end up with it.

I had the same question a few months ago and got some good responses in this thread:

http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/lab-breeders-question-t7314422.html?t=7314422

From what I've read, if you wait a bit to neuter them, by 2 years old or so, you are much more likely to get the big blocky head as the testosterone helps develop it.

Are you getting a girl or boy? I know we PM'd a bit, but I forget.

What the head ends up is based on BOTH parents. Joey is the dad of my pups.

This is one boy at 7 weeks, and he's the same boy in my signature, so you can see what his head turned into.

ugh i was kind of hoping for a 75-pounder this time. I'm hoping my pup won't end up that heavy. How were you able to find out Joey's weight? Your breeder mentioned it?

My mistake, my fingers got to quick when typing,i ment over 75lbs not 85.but anyway,I just love the size and looks of both parents. She told me sienna was close to 80 lbs.and looking at the pictures of joey he has to be every bit as big.

The Windfall line of Labs is historically known for the "Typy" head.. known as the blocky head too...

Minefalls is where my boy Satch is from... Laura breeds for a certain look, but most importantly the temperament.. Satch is the sweetest boy... Your puppy will have the proper head because of genetics...but more importantly not have the"Marley" nuttiness... that is why you you buy from a good breeder VS BYB or Puppymill store.

Oh, and don't panic. *Some* lines go through what we sometimes refer to as the 'pinhead' stage or 'paper bag' stage. Don't worry ... the head will come back.

Last time I spoke to Joey's breeder, he's 92#. Jack is 80# and he seems rather small to me.

Yikes. Don't get me wrong he looks like a beautiful dog but my last lab was close to 90 lbs. and I just found that to be "a lot of dog". Good thing labs are good natured!

Do you have a link on your page to Jack? I love seeing my pup's half brothers.

All my dogs are on my website which is in my sig. The guy in the photo in my sig is also 80#. They both may be more now as that was a few month ago. Jack is 22" tall and Jed about 23", so compared to the labs that most folks have (like when we go to PetSmart or the dog park), my guys are short. But since they are very active, they are all muscle.

More on the blocky head...

If you look back into the history of the Labrador he is from Newfoundland...once called the lessor Newfoundland St. John's dog... he was seen pulling fishing carts and nets for fisherman, had a knack for upland hunting too and was brought back to England , re-mixed with other hunting dogs, but the unique thing was his dominate gene always kept him looking like a Lab...

My Satch has a huge squash, and during walks people think they are seeing a mix or a "New Breed" of small Newfoundland Retrievers... not all pups from the windfall line will have a head as big as my Satch's... his whole body in someways is 'Big"(not tall)and perhaps a reason for Minefalls not to keep him to show...but he also is not as big as Cooper (yet), their prize Stud dog...(Satch's Grandfather)

Annie Cogo was Laura Witts mentor, she passed away last year... The Windfall line of dogs was based on the Dickendall line.. Which in the thread Top Dogs you will see how influential "Arnold" was... he sired Ch. Windfall's Black Piper WC her famous bitch...

We got our puppy from Laura yesterday. And boy what a good looking fellow he is.The picture i had of him did not do him any justice. We could not be happier with Bentley or thank Laura enough for letting us have one of her puppies.

But since they are very active, they are all muscle.

They all look in very good shape! It makes me sad when I see so many overweight labs in the show ring. I think of their hips and cringe inwardly.

If mine ends up looking anything like one of your boys I'll be pleased. I'm happy really happy with his personality which is only moderately active. After his walk he tends to flake out in the house and relax. I'm not sure if he gets that from his mom or dad. When I told people I was getting a brown lab all my obedience friends look worried. I didn't realize the brown ones had a rep for hyperactivity, which may be unjustified.

Here's our Bentley,He's 8 weeks and weights 10 lbs.

He looks just like mine. I guess everybody says that but 2 things about him struck me, first the really dark chocolate coat which I love, and the not so blocky head that some lab puppies have. I wonder if this is typical of "Joey babies". Mine is now 5 months old and he's just starting to look more mature. His head is starting to look male, especially if you look at him "head on" on as opposed to looking down at him.

I like looking at the dogs from Canyon Labradors to see if I can pick out any similarities. (same dad).

So what is his personality like?

On another note, you can have the best pedigree and start with the best dogs, BUT if you neuter too early the head will NOT develop to its potential due to the lack of testosterone !!!!!!!!!!

He is just the sweetest boy.Plays with everybody. In the house playing with his rope toy,he'll bring it back for you to throw, but once you get outside,he could care less about the toys and grab leaves, twigs, rocks. But right now its play, eat and sleep.

Brette-How much did your puppy weight when you got him and how much now?

How much did your puppy weight when you got him and how much now?

I can't remember what he weighed in at the vet when I got him. He was pugdy-ish though and has since trimmed down. I have no clue what he weighs now but he is keeping pace growth-wise with the other dogs in puppy school. I keep him on the lean side as I'm always concerned about his growing bones and joints.

Yours sounds like a lovely little guy. I'm finding it hard as well keeping sticks and rocks out of his mouth. He's known what "drop it" means since he was 2 1/2 months old! He always has something potentially life threatening in his mouth!

If you want to keep me posted you can always IM me!

As you can see they go through many stages of growth. Some may be fuglier than others, but as others stressed it's all about genetics. If the parents have the look you want chances are so will your puppy. I think it's kinda fun to see the different stages they go through.
