Which food do you guys think is better? I just bought a bag of blue buffalo large breed for the dogs but they also had the natural balance and i dont know if made the right choice. They had a sales lady at the store for blue so of course she said how much better they were but....brodie has allergies, like ear infections and licks his paws and scratches a lot. i did a search but i cant find this info.

thanks!

I am not sure about Natural Balance. I put Madison on Blue Buffalo LB when nutro changed there formula. She is doing really well on it, but she doesn't have any food allergies, but she is a picky eater though.

Well, when I rescued Angel I placed her too on Blue Buffalo. Both she and I loved it. Iwas more than satisfied with the ingredients and she loved the taste- not long after she began with skin conditions. her vet recommended a limited ingedient diet- so )with the help of this board and my vet) I chose Natural Balance potato and Duck. We've since changed to sweet potato and venison and add a few tablespoons of canned sweet potato and fish to the mix along with a few dolups of plain white yogurt. Angel is doing vcery well on her current diet and Ialmost never have t ouse the prednisone anymore. A few weeks ago I decided I was going to try her on a cup of nutro max chicken formula- big mistake- she broke out immediently and was itchign and scratching for a week! So it's Natural Balance for us. I'm very happy with it.

I second the Natural Balance. It works really well for Lia. I haven't used Blue Buffalo though and actually haven't heard much about it.

Here's Blue Buffalo's link if you are interested: http://www.bluebuff.com/health/wholesome-nutrition.shtml

I also have a dog with food allergies (a cocker) and I feed their Health Bar treats religiously without issues. I like the brand, they are very comparable to other all nautral diets and if I ever have to switch from Eagle Pack, I'd feel comfortable feeding BB.

Thanks everyone, this is exactly what i needed. I think I am going to return the bag of blue buffalo and pick up a bag of Natural Balance. Is it true that the thing they would be allergic to are the Glutens? Because i know that neither one has any. But i dont think my costco food at a fraction of the price does either!

I am pretty sure blue buffalo has gluten (in the form of Barley) in it's food. We have used it in the past with Barkley and had wonderful results. We switched to Eagle Pack because it was more readily available to us and it's what he gets for lunch at Doggie Day Care. We have Duke currently on Natural Balance Duck and Potato because he's allergic to almost everything under the sun and that's the only food we've been able to find near our house that doesn't seem to have anything he's allergic to. They're all good but I think it all depends on what you're dog is having problems with as to whether or not a food will work for you. I know if you're having allergy problems they say to try a totally new protien and carbohydrate to see if it stops the itching and try to use a 1 protien/1 carb diet so you can properly isloate what's causing the problem. Good luck!

Oh ok, i didnt know that Barley was a gluten. It sounds like what you guys are saying is that the Natural Balance may be a better option IF his allergies are food related. cant hurt to try!

I put Jimmy on BB and had to take him off it. It made him really itchy. He has never reacted to a food like that. His previous owner had him on Beneful over 2 years ago and he wasn't itchy on that. Go figure!*shrugs* Hopefully the NB works for you. :)

I am currently switching my 3 from Canidae to Blue Buffalo so I don't have alot of advise yet. I was drawn to Blue because of the ingredients. I hope it works, I hate switching foods.

It might work if he's allergic to mainstream dog food ingredients. I know a few people have had good luck with the Wellness Core allergy formula's. However they have rice in them so they won't work for us. But a lot of people have luck with their Venison and Rice or Duck and Rice. (just as a side note, our allergies are to barley, chicken, corn, rice, peanut butter, sweet potato, soy, wheat... And I think something else that I'm not remembering!!).

Oh, and be careful what your dog chews on outside too. Duke is allergic to Oak trees and just had a breakout because he was chewing on pieces of wood (we were stacking wood for the winter at the time and never gave it a though!!).

My Chloe has tummy problems and IBD and has been on Natural Balance Potatoe & Duck for quite a few months. She seems to like it, and is doing okay, although she still has a bout every once in a blue moon.... nothing like she used to though.

That's the same reason I ended up putting Lia on Natural Balance. My vet now suspects that Lia has IBD, though we didn't have the biopsy done to confirm it for sure. The NB has done wonders for Lia's digestive system and so far *knock on wood*, we have only had 1 round of unexplained diarrhea since we started on it. I think she was just stressed out at the time, though. I have her on the Fish & Sweet Potato version.

I've never tried Natural Balance.

I switched both dogs from Nutro to Blue Buff Fish and Sweet potato.

It's expensive (about $45 for a 35 lb bag), but the dogs have been doing great on it.
