our dogs love bones but biscuit gets diarrea from them. does anyone know of a way to get his body to adjust to them? i'd hate to not be able to give them to him since it's such a great treat

What kind of bones?

I feed raw whole cow femurs, and I find the only time the dogs have a problem is when I feed them fresh. I've learned to freeze them overnight and give them still frozen, and the problem was solved. Some people scoop out some of the marrow from the bones until the dog adjusts, but mine get them all the time, so they are used to the richness of the marrow, I don't think that causes our problem. Maybe they eat it slower at first when it's frozen or maybe being thoroughly frozen kills some ameobas or bacteria that make it happen. Don't know the cause, just know that freezing is the cure- couldn't hurt to try it.

I'm wondering if they are raw bones (and what kind, since some don't seem to do as well as others with both knuckles and with marrow) or if it's a commercial/pet store bones, smoked etc.

i pretty much have just given them the bones from whatever meat i cooked for dinner (except chicken bones). i've never given them raw bones, should i be? where do you get raw ones without all of the meat on them?

OH!

You never want to give them cooked bones, they can splinter and cause injury or even obstructions. Cooking bones make them brittle and dangerous, raw bones are flexible.

You can buy beef marrow bones at any grocery store. They still have a little bit of meat on them but that's good. You can also get femurs and other larger bones from butchers.

I'm glad we cleared this up so you'll know not to give them cooked bones again :)
