I have a 5 month old male chocolate lab named Bear. I currently have him eating Iams puppy large breed. My question is this: should I be feeding him something "better", more natural with no corn stuff or animal byproducts??? My 10yr old yellow(died in Jan.) had big time allergy issues and had to be given allergy shots weekly. I want to try to avoid expensive vet bills with Bear, if it can be helped. Do you think feeding him something other than Iams would help? I've heard that Nutro does not use byproducts or corn, anyone use this brand for their pups? Any food suggestions a would be appreciated. Thanks.

I suggest you go on the websites with the following companies to gain some insight on the vast range of formulas available.

www.naturapet.com
www.championpetfoods.com
www.eaglepack.com

Know your puppies needs
Know your budget
Find a formula with ingredients and nutrient values that make sense to you
Find a company you trust

And IMO you can find a better formula profile (on paper anyway) for the same price or less than IAMS. Check out Healthwise on the Natura site.

I fed Mya Iams from the time I got her from the breeder until about one year old. Then I switched her to Taste of the Wild. I wanted to feed her something that I thought was better than Iams (and didn't contain some of the ingredients that I thought was bothering Mya and didn't feel good about). The above post suggests some good ones. You don't have to spend a whole lot more either. I don't pay much more for Taste of the Wild than I did for Iams.

Cal Nat Lamb..(suppose to be the Simplest , Cleanest food in the market Place) if you believe Dr. Belfield the man who created it along with Natura Pet..It's what my boy has eaten since weaning... I am very happy with the results so far...In the past Eagle Pack worked very well for my Jazzy girl...:D
