Hello! I am sorry to bother you all, but I don't know where to turn. My life with my beloved dogs is ending, and I just cannot believe it. I am now having to find housing for my kids, let alone my dogs. I'll just copy an email that I just wrote to a lab rescue group that I don't think covers my area. Please if anyone has any advise, or pointers, or help. I am so upset that I am close to useless, but I don't have time to fall apart, for my dogs' sake.
This is an email I sent out just a minute ago:
Hello! I have found your group via Internet search. I am actually glad my first communication with you is via email, as I am in the heartbroken, sobbing stage with my dog problem.
I have two wonderful labs that I must find homes for FAST. I have lived in a home for over ten years, and thought (emphasis on thought) that it was my home forever, as the landlord promised me that I was renting wiht option to buy, etc. Well, there is a huge housing boom in my town (Lacey Township - Forked River, New Jersey - Ocean County), with homes quadrupling in price the last few months. I am sure you know where this is going...
The landlord has turned on us over $$$ greed - naturally, and has put on the heat full steam ahead via hiring attorneys, etc., to get us out ASAP, as the housing market is grinding to a halt, and he does NOT want to miss out on a huge profit.
I am a lab lover, and have a total of seven dogs - I am absolutely panic-stricken and desperate - I have done nothing but cry the last week over this mess, but am starting to calm down. I have three labs whom I love so dearly, but am going to euthanize rather than adopt out.
My oldest lab, Cinder, is nearly 13. Her health is fantastic, but she is nearly blind and deaf. I cannot even think of putting her through a move, so she will be euthanized, probably tomorrow.
My second oldest lab is Cracker, who just celebrated his 9th birthday on Saturday, 6/7. He and Cinder have been inseparable, and he is just too old and cranky for anyone new to put up with him. Thus, as much as I ABSOLUTELY cannot believe I have to do this, I am euthanizing him, too.
My third oldest lab is named Spades - she is "my" dog, and is totally devoted to me. As she has gotten older, she is very shy around strangers - not a mean bone in her body, but very timid. Mostly, she just dislikes other dogs - perhaps just over jealousy for me??? She loves and adores me, and, sadly, I feel that her temperament is such that it would not be fair to her in the long run to adopt her out. At the very least, she would be fine in a home with no other dogs, and I know that is a lot to ask for. She, too, has always been with Cracker and Cinder, as they are her parents. She is 7 years old.
I have a "pair" of labs that I know will be WONDERFUL to adopt out. They are mother and son, and have been together since he was born. Her name is Skye, and his name is Moe. She is a "white" variety of Canadian lab, with a pedigree that is unbelievable. Every single one of four or five generations were champions - dual champions - with her grandfather being champion in Canada, UK, and America, etc. She was born in 1995, so is 8 years old. She is neutered and in perfect health, with her body type being the small stocky type.
Her son, Moe, is a gorgeous black male - he was born in 1997, so he is six years old. He is a super smart, gentle, loving dog, also totally devoted to his Mom. Since his birth, she was very attached to him - I know this is unusual, as none of my dogs have given a hoot about their pups, but this Mom, Skye, was totally attached to this one pup, Moe. Thus, our reason for keeping him. Again, Moe has no health problems, other than scarred ears from all the puppies and younger dogs chewing on him and playing with him!
They are such a wonderful pair - it would kill me to see them separated. They are crated at night, though it is not necessary at this point. They just love their crate anyway. They are crated together, and just spend the day eating and sleeping and playing together. Neither dog has a single vice - I mean that - no barking ever, no chewing, no house soiling, etc. They are truly a wonderful pair, and it is my only solace after euthanizing the lot that these two could find a loving home.
Lastly, I have two yellow female sisters, almost 1-1/2 years old. Each of my daughters has hand-raised one of these pups. One is named Ziggy, and one Mello. I have promised my daughters that I will do everything in my power to keep these two little pups. They are wonderful, beautiful, and loving - I am pounding the pavement for a landlord that will accept them, and I think I may have found a home. Emphasis on "may"... I cannot imagine the further grief and heartbreak if we cannot keep these last two as well.
PLEASE can you help me??? I see you cover Burlington County, which is right on the border of Ocean County. I have called and called and searched and searched, and can find no Lab rescues in my direct area. I am willing to travel anywhere in Pennsylvania or New Jersey to help my poor dogs. I am SO ashamed of this whole mess, but I don't have time to punish myself. My dogs that I can save, must be saved, but my time is SO LIMITED. I just cannot believe this is happening to my family...
PLEASE, please can you help me? I don't understand this world at all - we are animal lovers, and all our supposed "friends" just think we are fools for even caring about our pets. I have had some people even dare to suggest that I just let them loose in the woods - can you imagine? At any rate, I hope that, if nothing else, you could offer me a kind word or a prayer, or point me in some direction.
I truly am hoping that I hear back from you soon - PLEASE. I am begging. My name is Laurie Winkelmann, and I live in Forked River, New Jersey 08731.
Thanks for any help you can send my dogs' way.
Sincerely,
Laurie Winkelmann
