ive got my 7 month old a kong, and i refuse to pay the prices of the original kong stuff they sell cos they cost a fortune so ive been putting peanut butter in and freezing it, trouble is my dog is starting to get a little sick of it and also the smell and fat content is a concern, what else can i put in it? that is
a- easier to wash out than peanut butter
b-just as cheap
c- isnt a heart attack waiting to happen
thank you

There are lots of things you can put in there. Some of mine's favorites are:
Peanut butter and banana
applesauce (unsweetened--no sugar added, don't use artificial sweeteners)
pumpkin (canned pure pumpkin, not pie filling)
scrambled egg with veggies in it
cut up hotdog (doesn't get it often)
cut up pieces of fruit or veggies: apples, banana, pears, brocolli, etc. Sometimes I mix applesauce with fruit and freeze it.
There are tons of things you can add!
Other things are:
fruit and yogurt
Here are some recipes from kong.com--look under tips and advice--kong recipes

Good luck! The possibilities are pretty much endless!

Wow, good information. Chloe loves peanut butter so we ususally just use that with a small dog biscuit. Toby hasnt acquired the taste for peanut butter yet, so I just put a small dog biscuit in his and he works on just getting that out.

Silly question about the PB....
I always plug the small hole with PB, but when I put PB in the kong I just smear some on the sides....is that what you all do? Lena gets it cleaned out pretty quick...but I wasn't sure how much was to much when it came to PB...... do you actually fill it up?
Thanks! :)

Besides the things already mentioned- we also add these:
dry oats with applesauce
dry kibble or wet dog food
chicken broth (freeze)

I use the peanut butter to keep the kibble stuck in.

I mix up some cottage cheese with bananas and freeze. Or yogurt. Then seal it with pnut butter. You can actually shove an entire banana in there and freeze it. Fat free cream cheese is also good.

I've only given Tia a filled Kong a few times and I've always just put kibble and peanut butter and frozen it. I tried to put a biscuit in there last night (I had to squeeze the kong to make the hole less round). But it was in there so good I can't figure out how she would have ever gotten it. Do they just keep licking it until it gets soggy and breaks apart?

Luke just loves cheereos a very good really low fat snack I mix that with plain regular yogurt freeze the kong.I have jammed pieces of dog cookies in there various sizes some pieces will fall out easily and some he has to work on.Yes they do get soft from "trying" to lick them out but it seems to keep him occupied.I know when he has had enough he will bring the kong to me and drop it on my foot as if to say "I need a little help here" and I do pop the soggy cookie for him.

when we use pb we don't fill it- just a good hunk to smear around inside. when we mix in apple sauce we use a little bit of pb to plug the small hole. and then fill with applesauce-- we have a small puppy kong though. i won't fill all the way when we get the bigger kong. and DEF not if we're using pb. :o) I love the freezing (if I can remember the night before) b,c it takes longer!

I clean my kongs and other rubber toys by putting them in the dishwasher.... gets all the PB my dogs miss right out!
